Su***de Awareness Month | First Responders & Mental Health

First responders are the ones people call when life feels overwhelming. But behind every headset, badge, fire truck, and ambulance is a person carrying experiences of their own.

First responders are regularly exposed to traumatic events, high-stress situations, loss, and experiences that can stay with them long after the call is over. The difficult calls. The scenes you can’t forget. The voices that stay with you. The long shifts, missed holidays, exhaustion, and responsibility of being there when someone else needs you most, it can add up

This Su***de Awareness Month, we want to remind our first responder community that asking for help is not a sign of weakness. Checking on your coworkers matters. Having the difficult conversation matters.

Behind every headset, badge, fire engine, and ambulance is a person. Check on your partners. Check on your dispatchers. Check on your officers, firefighters, and medics. And remember, the people who answer the call deserve support, too.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis or having thoughts of su***de, call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline. If there is an immediate danger or life-threatening emergency, call 911.

You spend your career showing up for others. It’s okay to let someone show up for you. You can't pour from an empty glass, so take care of your mind so you can keep saving lives.

💙 Sometimes the signs aren’t obvious.

A person who is struggling may not always say, “I need help.”

They may become withdrawn, stop doing things they normally enjoy, seem unusually angry or hopeless, or simply say they’re tired of everything.

If someone comes to mind, check on them.

Ask. Listen. Stay. You don’t have to have the right words or fix everything.

Sometimes, knowing that someone cares is where the conversation starts.

💙 A simple “Are you okay?” can mean more than you realize.
