Georgians need a Consumer Utility Council (CUC) to represent and advocate for them at the Public Service Commission. While the Public Service Commission is supposed to weigh the interests of both utility companies and consumers, it frequently serves as a rubber stamp for utility companies. We need the CUC to serve as a dedicated advocate for individuals and small businesses, ensuring they get a say in their power bills.

Last Tuesday, Georgia PIRG met with our Georgia legislators for US PIRG’s annual DC lobby day.

We advocated for legislation that would increase price transparency in healthcare and standardize food date labels to prevent food waste.

Georgia Power is betting big on new data centers driving up demand for electricity. They have approval to build 10,000 MW of electricity, most of it gas powered to serve data centers. This is enough to power 5-10 million homes! But if the data centers don’t need the electricity, residential customers and small businesses will end up paying for it unless legislation passes to make it clear we can’t be forced to foot the bill.
