We often times refer to our community as a "Samford family," and that statement couldn't be more true for history professor Jonathan Bass. His wife Jennifer taught here and their children have all come to Samford: Kathleen, Caroline and Nathaniel, with Kathleen being their most recent graduate of Beeson Divinity School this year.

We can't wrap Commencement without acknowledging our recent graduates whose work and example made an impact during their time at Samford. Three awards were presented to students, including the John C. Pittman Spirit Award, the President’s Cup and the Velma Wright Irons Award.

This year, five students received the Pittman Spirit Award which recognizes graduates who consistently exhibit Christian character in community life. The recipients were:

🏅 McNeil Honea (Brock School of Business)
🏅 Isabella Lopez (Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing)
🏅 Addison Toy (Howard College of Arts and Sciences)
🏅 Paisley Williams (Howard College of Arts and Sciences)

🏅 Liliana Nicole Hatch in the School of Health Professions received the President’s Cup as the graduate with the highest grade point average.
🏅 Maria “Luna” Mora in Brock School Business received the Velma Wright Irons Award for the graduate with the second highest cumulative grade point average.

Give it up for these Bulldogs!

Grand Marshall Bucky McMillan has a nice ring to it, too. 😌 We’re honored he was part of the We Love Homewood Day parade and festival!

Coach McMillan also earned the Quality of Life Award from the City of Homewood, given annually to the person who has made the biggest impact on Homewood in the past year.

"Thank you to Mayor McClusky and the City of Homewood, it is truly an honor to receive these awards," McMillan said. "We greatly appreciate the partnership with the people of Homewood as we felt your unwavering support throughout the entire basketball season. We certainly want to do our part as 'Homewood's Team' to continue to bring pride to the community that has been so supportive of our university through the years."

As his success on the football field grew, so did his acumen in the business analytics space. A student-athlete and now two-time Samford University Brock School of Business graduate, Chandler Smith culminated his college experience with his capstone NFL data analytics project, a walk across the commencement stage, and his own run in the 2024 NFL Draft. https://bit.ly/3Wxj0cW

Over the weekend, Samford graduated the Class of 2024, during which Bill Smith, founder of Shipt and Landing, was presented with an honorary Doctor of Commerce degree before delivering his commencement address to our Samford University Brock School of Business and Samford University Orlean Beeson School of Education graduates.

🗣️“To the graduating class of 2024, let me begin with congratulations. I’m so honored to be with you today, to celebrate the start of your life beyond this university.”

He began by discussing the virtues of compound interest, and how graduating seniors’ investments now, in business, relationships and education, will reap positive returns long after they have graduated.

While emphasizing the impact of compound interest, Bill also pledged a $100,000 donation to Samford University. His generous contribution will enhance the educational landscape of Samford.

Thank you, Bill! We are incredibly appreciative of your gift and the valuable lessons you shared.
