Meet recent graduate Julia York (BSN 2022)!

One week after her 12th birthday, doctors told her parents she had a brain tumor and less than a year to live. Julia defied the odds and now, a decade later, she has graduated from UAB School of Nursing. Her next step? Joining the Hematology-Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant unit at Children's of Alabama.

NICU journey leads family to nursing - School of Nursing - News

As we celebrate Mother's Day this weekend, one of our recent BSN graduates shared the story of how she—and her mother—found a calling in nursing.

Jade England's journey began in the NICU, alongside her twin sister. Their first few months faced several challenges, but the experience led their mother Tara Wood to nursing. Now, more than 20 years later, Jade is following in her mother's footsteps and returning to the NICU in order to make a difference in her patients' lives.

“I want to be able to be that nurse to let the parents know that I was in their child’s place. I just want to provide the best care possible and hopefully sharing my story will make a difference in their stay in the NICU. I don’t want to give them false hope, but I also want them to know that miracles happen.”

Photos from UAB School of Nursing Junior Board of Visitors's post 01/21/2021

Today, we salute the life and legacy of Charles A. “Scotty” McCallum, former President of the University of Alabama at Birmingham and dedicated supporter of the UAB School of Nursing. Dr. McCallum passed away the morning of Saturday, January 16.

Scotty McCallum was a hero to many, and his uncanny ability to connect with everyone he encountered made him not just a legend in the Birmingham and UAB communities, but also across the state, country and world. As UAB President, he worked with former UAB School of Nursing Dean Rachel Booth and alumna (and then faculty member) Juanzetta Flowers to establish the School’s long-standing Board of Visitors (BOV). His admiration of the School and deep appreciation for the nursing profession led him to establish an endowed scholarship at the UAB School of Nursing in 2010. Alongside his sons Scott, Chip, Phillip and Chris, Dr. McCallum created the scholarship in memory of his late wife and their mom, Alice Lasseter McCallum, who had a career as a nurse and was a graduate of Jefferson-Hillman Hospital School of Nursing on UAB’s campus. He advocated for the BOV for many years and officially joined the BOV in 2011, sharing his knowledge and shining personality and serving until his death.

As we acknowledge Dr. McCallum’s incredible legacy, we also recognize the indelible imprint his work and support left on the UAB School of Nursing.

Last night, four frontline nurses were honored at the first game of the 2020 World Series. Three of the four nurses chose to go to New York City during the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the hardest hit cities in the country. As our worlds adjust to a new normal, we continue to recognize all of the frontline workers and nurses who continue to sacrifice and provide such important care.

Thank you to all of the nurses and UAB alumni caring for their communities. For more stories that recognize the impact UABSON alumni have had during COVID-19 and around the world, go to https://www.uab.edu/nursing/news/coronavirus
