We are continuing our summer internship series with Lauren Pepper, marketing major with concentration in data analytics! She is a market strategy intern for Firehouse Agency this summer.

She commented on her fantastic experience, saying, "Everyone is nice, we can bring our dogs to work. They have campaign Thursdays where the team celebrates people who are doing good work and the new staff must sing a song. The social media intern and I have chosen '9-5' to sing as a duet. They also play pickle ball every Tuesday."

Mitch Owen is the ‘Athlete Branding Intern’ at SportsTrust, but the only intern tagged with assisting the marketing team efforts. He started out helping with recruiting biographies for 2025 NFL Draft prospects, but recently have started a project where he is spearheading the training camp care packages for clients when they report in early August.

He said, "It is a product gifting opportunity for brands around the country wanting to capitalize on a partnership with us, capturing exposure from their products in NFL locker rooms. I reach out to apparel/personal care/nutrition/fitness and health brands on a day-to-day basis coordinating our care package. I also am the main point of contact for a couple of our clients Youth Camps in their hometowns, giving back to their communities. All activities, invoices, and quotes that are camp related are communicated through me."

In terms of his long-term career aspirations, Mitch is considering pursuing a master's degree after graduation to further his education in sports business. After that, he hopes to be better suited for a career in either Athlete Representation, or a corporate role in the NFL.

He said, "This internship has been extremely beneficial so far in providing me hands-on experience at an agency that is built on a foundation of knowledge, experience and integrity. The skills and connections I am building here are directly aligned with my career goals, setting a solid foundation for my professional growth."

In the days leading up to the historic MLB at Rickwood Field events, professor Darin White, executive director of the Center for Sports Analytics, spoke to several media outlets about the significance of the event and its impact on Birmingham as an emerging city for sports.

In a feature published by bhambanner.com, White said, "It's great for our current population, but it's also great for future growth, because it's a way for our city to showcase itself to others. If a brand like Major League Baseball is willing to invest the kind of money they're going to invest and come to our city and put that game on international television, it is the best marketing a city could possibly do. You just can't buy that kind of exposure.”

While away on sabbatical, professor Art Carden has stayed busy with his research. Check out his recent articles on econlib.org!

One of his articles, titled, "Transfers Rather Than Transactions: Rent-Seeking Is Costly", discusses the concept of rent-seeking as a drain on society's resources. His article argues that activities such as lobbying and distributive politics mirror theft, diverting time and resources away from productive endeavors, ultimately harming society's overall welfare.

In his other article, titled, "Helmut Schoeck's Envy: A Theory of Social Behaviour", expands on the idea that envy can sometimes motivate individuals to strive for success and innovation, but it can also breed destructive behaviors and hinder cooperation.
