Due to the ongoing FAFSA delays, UAB has extended the May 1st deadline for the Freshman Enrollment Deposit and to accept scholarship offers to June 1st for fall 2024 enrollment. Additionally, UAB will continue to award merit scholarships to qualifying students who apply to the university until June 1. UAB will monitor the rollout of FAFSA data to institutions and is prepared to make additional accommodations for students, if necessary.

Hey guys! I’m Lara Aldouar, a senior majoring in Neuroscience from Hoover, AL. I moved from Jordan during my sophomore year of high school, so when it came time for college, I knew I wanted to stay close to home. I had heard great things about the opportunities at UAB and was excited to be a part of it.
The reason why I chose to stay at UAB was because of the amazing community. From fellow students to advisors and professors, everyone is so supportive and encouraging. They’re there every step of the way, helping you connect with resources and opportunities to succeed. When I first got to UAB, I never imagined that I could pursue a career in medicine. But with the support and opportunities here, I realized it was possible, and ever since I switched to pre-med I’ve received nothing but support every step of the way. I’ve also gotten the chance to grow as a leader at UAB through TrailBlazers, Dance Marathon, and Panhellenic. I would not be the person or leader that I am today without these organizations or the community that I’ve found within them.
As I wrap up my time at UAB, my advice to prospective students is to keep an open mind and get involved on campus as much as you can. There are so many opportunities, and if you reach out to advisors and professors, you’ll discover even more chances to grow personally and academically. Go Blazers!!

Hello everyone! My name is Alex Hayes, and I am a Senior graduating Spring 2024 from Montgomery, AL, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience with double minors in Chemistry and Medical Sociology at UAB. As I conclude my 4 years here, I want to emphasize the importance of both social support and solitude. Building a strong social network is crucial for both personal and professional success. The peers, faculty, staff, and community members that you surround yourself with will enrich your undergraduate experience more than you know; however, carving out intentional alone time for reflection is equally important. My advice to prospective students: Don’t wait to network or get involved on campus! UAB offers many opportunities for career exploration, so do not worry if you are not sure what you want to study yet. Embrace the journey of discovering your academic path!

Hello! My name is Lena Lutz. I’m a freshman majoring in Genetics and Genomic Sciences and minoring in Psychology and Public Health to become a Genetic Counselor. My major is the main reason I chose UAB. The Genetics and Genomic Sciences major is very niche, and I’m fortunate UAB has it! This made my decision very streamlined. I only applied to UAB, and the application process was straightforward and quick to fill out. I believe I completed it in about 15 minutes, but waiting for my SAT scores and high school transcripts to make it to UAB took some time. Once all these components were there, I found out I had been admitted to UAB in about a week!
Looking back on my first year at UAB, it’s the home I’ve made for myself and the people I’ve met that I’m most proud of and cherish. I’m a person who likes to have a full schedule. My life has been busy this year, but I wouldn’t want it any other way!
One piece of advice for any upcoming college freshman is to be involved on campus. Joining organizations you’re passionate about surrounds you with like-minded individuals with whom you will build lasting relationships. The more involved you are on campus, the more it becomes your home. Seeing familiar faces is essential in making a college campus your home since these people are part of the new community you are living in, and some of them will become part of your new family!

Hey Blazers, my name is Daniel Norred. I am a sophomore from Oxford, Alabama, majoring in Biomedical Sciences. I chose UAB because I want to pursue a career in the medical field. I knew UAB and the city of Birmingham would provide me with the best resources to reach my goal. I chose to stay at UAB because I surround myself with like-minded people and my professors are invested and push me to succeed. I am honored to serve as a UAB TrailBlazer, where I give tours to prospective students and show what I love about this incredible university. I serve as an SHP ambassador, where I promote the phenomenal community, resources, and opportunities within the School of Health Professions. I am also a part of Greek life, which has allowed me to meet some of my best friends and serve others through our philanthropy. Baptist Campus Ministries is another awesome organization I am active in and is one of many faith-based organizations on campus.
A piece of advice I would share with incoming students is to GET INVOLVED. UAB hosts hundreds of clubs/organizations, and joining a few will allow you to broaden your horizons and meet amazing people.

Hey everyone! My name is Sumedha Bobba, and I’m a senior from Madison, Alabama. I’m majoring in Neuroscience on the pre-med track while also pursuing an accelerated Master of Business Administration. As I reflect on my time at UAB, I can’t even begin to describe how much the Blazer community means to me. From students to advisors to professors, everyone is extremely dedicated to supporting others. Every student at UAB is truly seen as a celebrated individual rather than just a student ID number. We have some of the most unique, personable faculty members here who truly care for our personal and professional well-being. I’ll never forget the time I randomly walked into my advisor’s office on my way back from class one day. We somehow went from talking about our favorite TV shows to talking about my career interests, and he connected me with an internship that truly changed my life by helping me realize what I was passionate about. So many other students I know have stories like this, and I’m so grateful for how much UAB pours into us.
One piece of advice I have for future Blazers is to be open to new experiences. Try new food in the city (Falafel Cafe is my personal favorite) and go to random events on campus! You’ll never know where you’ll meet the professor that becomes your biggest advocate or the best friend that you will sit by during graduation.

"My name is Caroline Dean, and I chose UAB because UAB truly invests in their students. I grew up right here in Birmingham, so I've been surrounded by Blazers my entire life. When it came time to choose a college, it felt like UAB had already chosen me. I was offered generous scholarships, had a visit planned for me, countless UAB faculty reached out to me, and I had so many friends attending UAB. Before ever even stepping on campus, it felt like UAB was ready to give me every tool I needed to succeed, and that support was what I was looking for in a school. Simply put, UAB chooses their students, and that's why I chose UAB!"

We asked incoming students to share why they 💚

Today is Tinkering Tuesday with a session tonight with Collat School of Business and School of Engineering! Check out all of our Becoming a Blazer events:

Emma Schmidt, current student and Society of Women Engineers President, tells us why she chose UAB:

“I was drawn to UAB because of its unique culture, amazing community, and wealth of opportunities. When I came to campus as a biomedical engineering student, I got heavily involved in all the engineering organizations to explore all the different kinds of engineering. My interest and excitement for engineering made a good impression on a senior peer and she recommended me for a mechanical internship with NASA. Two years later I am being offered a full-time position from that internship straight after graduating. I am still amazed at the opportunities the UAB community and environment have given me!”

Blazers in Space:
Emma and other engineers at the Engineering Innovative Technology Group EITD took us on a tour of their labs and space station hardware. Check out the tour here:

We asked current students to share what makes UAB unique 💚

"UAB has so many opportunities that are accessible to students. UAB is a perfect size. It is big enough where there are huge opportunities but small enough where students can be involved, even as a freshman. As a pre-med student, I have been fortunate to have multiple opportunities that have prepared me to apply and begin medical school. I have been a part of 2 summer research internships, a shadowing class, numerous leadership opportunities, and continuous undergraduate research." - Callie, '21 Neuroscience Major from TN

Callie is also one of our Senior TrailBlazers! Have you seen Callie in our visit center or on your tour? Let us know below👇

🔔 Don't forget, the priority housing deadline for incoming freshmen is March 1st! Students that complete their enrollment checklist and apply for housing by this date will be eligible to select their rooms in June. Reminder: All freshmen (regardless of priority housing) are eligible to select their roommates! Learn more at
