Decatur Utilities continued its ongoing community support on Wednesday with presentation of $21,000 in checks to seven local non-profit agencies. (No DU ratepayer funds were used.) Funds came through proceeds from the employee fundraising auction, other fundraisers and the TVA Community Care Fund which was matched by employees' personal donations to United Way of Morgan County. And additional $3,850 was raised through vendor donations for the Decatur Morgan Hospital Foundation.

In a recent survey, DU employees voted to support three pillars of giving:

DU was a participant in last night's APACT meeting - Alabama 811's Alabama Public Awareness Cooperative Training. This vital training is for local excavators, first responders and public officials who work around underground utility infrastructure including power cables, natural gas lines, water lines and sewer lines. As we reminded them last night, it is state law that you call 811 at least 48 hours before digging to have underground lines marked by all local utilities serving your location. That applies to professionals as well as weekend warriors! This helps you avoid injury, possible death and the expense of repairing any damage you cause.

At various times this week, the Decatur Utilities Geographic Information Systems team will be using a drone to inspect power lines in the areas shown in the graphic below.

SCAMMERS use a lot of different tactics to try and separate you from your hard earned money! AND they are becoming very sophisticated and difficult to identify as fraudulent. ALWAYS err on the side of caution. It is perfectly ok to HANG UP and call the place of business back to verify if it was a legitimate call or not. We encourage you to do that if you ever receive a suspicious call from someone claiming to be from DU. Remember, we will never demand payment via credit card, prepaid card or ACH account information! Hang up and slam the scam!

We are excited to announce that Decatur Utilities received the 2026 Community Service Award from the American Public Gas Association (APGA). This award is presented to only one natural gas utility in the country each year and recognizes the accomplishments of the utility and its employees in improving and enhancing the quality of life of the community it serves.

DU was selected based on the vast support shown for the Decatur community in many areas - including:

Raising more than $125,000 for the Decatur Morgan Hospital Foundation through the Dragon Boat Race and Festival ; A long history of DU employees generously supporting United Way of Morgan County through payroll deduction, board service and campaign support; Raising past funds for the American Cancer Society and other non-profits; Participating and leading the Barrels of Love non-perishable food drive; Electric and natural gas educational safety programs; Involvement with multiple community and civic groups including Rotary and Kiwanis

While it is presented by the American Public Gas Association, DU's community involvement efforts include employees from all four utility services and work groups.

General Manager Ray Hardin accepted the award on behalf of the "DU Community Crew" at the recent APGA Annual Meeting.

Decatur Utilities is currently looking for a Maintenance Mechanic for our Wastewater Treatment Plant. This vital position repairs and maintains machinery and mechanical equipment such as pumps of all types and design, engines, electric motors, valves, piping, electronic controls and chemical feed systems at the water/wastewater treatment plant facilities. Decatur Utilities will be performing water construction work along Old Moulton Rd SW near the Beltline Rd SW intersection, on July 30th, 2026 from 8 p.m. until 4 a.m. on Friday, July 31. During these overnight work hours, Old Moulton Rd SW will be closed between Beltline Rd SW and Littrell Ave SW, with detours signed accordingly.

Utility workers will be on-site at 7:30 PM on Thursday to set up the necessary traffic control devices to notify motorists of the upcoming work zone.

DU asks that motorists be aware of all traffic control devices, construction personnel, and equipment in the work zone and to approach the area with extreme caution and at a reduced speed.
