Decatur Youth Services ( DYS) was established to help facilitate and encourage a community-wide effort in combating the problems in our community .
City of Decatur Youth Services Department is designed to help facilitate and encourage a community-wide effort in combating the problems in our community. This would entail high rate of school drop-outs, illiteracy, unemployment, teenage pregnancy, drug and alcohol use/abuse, gang activity, juvenile delinquency, and poverty, just to name a few. One of the primary functions will be to work cooperatively with existing agencies to enhance interagency communication and cooperation, which will result in the children being the beneficiary of our collective efforts. Also, this department will assist our law enforcement agencies by aiding in the rehabilitation of juvenile delinquents, youth felons, and juveniles who are serious habitual offenders. This department will support activities to deter gang membership. The Department of Youth Services will focus its efforts on at-risk youth and young adults from every socio-economic class and all areas of the community. However, the realization is that children from low income areas and minorities may benefit from our programs and services more efficiently. The goals of the Youth Services Department are to assist children in developing self-esteem by promoting a "Yes, I can" attitude, establishing a sense of self-worth by teaching children to excel on their individual levels, and building character by interacting with confident, successful adults to provide positive role models and mentors. With a coordinated community effort in helping to combat problems facing our youth and young adults, the City of Decatur's Youth Services Department will be an asset in changing young minds.

ABOUT ME:
Family is very important to me, and I wouldn't be where I am today without them. My parents shaped me into the person I am today, and I will forever be grateful for that. I now use the values they instilled in me as a child to push myself to be the best version of myself everyday!💛
WHY I CHOSE DYS:
I love DYS, because it's given me the opportunity to give back to the town I grew up in while also pouring into our youth and helping them become the people they aspire to be.
I've always had a passion for working with children of all ages, and I'm blessed to have the opportunity to now do it on a larger scale!🌟

NAME: Laci Parham
TITLE: Intern
ABOUT ME:
Laci is a pre-medical and Master of Public Health student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, concentrating in Maternal and Child Health Policy. She holds a B.S. in Medical Sociology with a minor in Chemistry and Spanish and is a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA).
Laci is also a certified Personal Trainer (CPT), Group Fitness, and Spin instructor. Besides her passion for fitness, she also loves to read. Laci believes knowledge is power. She will be applying to medical school this upcoming cycle, with the long-term goal of becoming an OB-GYN focused on minority health and reproductive equity.
WHY I CHOSE DYS:
Laci chose to work with Decatur Youth Services, because their mission aligns directly with her commitment to improving community health outcomes. As a pre-med and MPH student focused on minority health and reproductive equity, she is dedicated to programs that address the social and environmental factors influencing youth well-being.
Her work with DYS allows her to support adolescent girls through evidence-based education, empowerment, and culturally responsive programming, advancing population health at the community level.
At the drop of a dime a child’s whole world can change🎈
Director Johnny Jones demonstrated this beautifully at Durbin’s Leadership meeting Thursday, reminding us that a child’s life can change in an instant, but with the help and support of DYS and the community we have the opportunity to make a huge and lasting impact in that child’s life💙
It takes all of us to create brighter futures for the youth of Decatur. We are better together! 🤝
