The Gopher Frog (Lithobates capito) has been an AF Priority Species since 2018, when we began a captive propagation for the species in an effort to bring up numbers of releasable frogs each year. Individuals will travel long distances (up to a mile or more) to breed in temporary breeding ponds. Females lay eggs in shallow water in a single mass that can contain 3,000 to 7,000 eggs, which attach to vegetation when released. Once hatched, the tadpoles metamorphose in three to seven months.⁠ In 2020, AF released 442 fully-metamorphosed Gopher Frogs!
