Students from NIST International School had the oppurtunity to volunteer and participate in a marmoset enrichment crafting workshop. Thank you to all the students and staff that helped us create valuable toys for rescued marmosets and tamarins! They also got hands-on experience making slow loris hammocks, bird seed balls, marmoset ladders, sorting insects and making feeder boxes, planting morning glory to feed the animals and cut up some bamboo to make feeders for our little loris friends! Thank you all, enrichment toys, particularly for primates like these guys, will be providing valuable mental health and stimulation outlets for our furry friends at Nok Nam Bang Pha Breeding Center.

Tragic Fire at Chatuchak Market Highlights Urgent Need for Improved Animal
Welfare in Thailand

Bangkok, Thailand - June 11, 2024 - Love Wildlife Foundation is deeply saddened by
the devastating fire that broke out at Chatuchak market early Tuesday morning,
resulting in the loss of approximately 1,000 animals. The tragic incident serves as a
stark reminder of the urgent need to address the safety and welfare of animals in the
pet trade in Thailand.

The fire, which occurred at approximately 4:30am, has left many wild and exotic
species, including snakes, birds, and mammals, dead in their cages with no means of
escape. This tragedy reflects on the poor conditions in which animals are kept at
Chatuchak market, which has been criticized in the past by Love Wildlife Foundation
and other welfare groups for its illegal wildlife trade and substandard animal care.

The market's notorious reputation for overcrowding, poor sanitation, and lack of proper care increases the risk of mortality and disease among the animals. This lack of welfare for both domestic and wildlife sold at the market, coupled with constant complaints Love Wildlife receives from concerned individuals, puts a spotlight on the profound lack in the quality and enforcement of the current welfare regulations.

Love Wildlife Foundation urges the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to
permanently shut down the live animal trade at Chatuchak market, citing the need for
immediate action to prevent further tragedies. Furthermore, Love Wildlife Foundation
calls on the Department of Livestock Development to re-evaluate its work in accordance with the Cruelty Prevention and Animal Welfare Act, B.E. 2557 (2014), and consider a revision to strengthen regulations and enforcement around animal welfare in pet markets across Thailand.

Nancy Gibson, Founder of Love Wildlife Foundation, states, "I am heartbroken for the
animals who met their death in a tragic way, but I also think something like this could
possibly have been prevented with better standards. Is it a lack of enforcement or
standard, or is it just a faulty animal welfare law that needs revision? You decide."

Love Wildlife Foundation is committed to working with local authorities and welfare
organizations to ensure that the welfare of animals in Thailand is prioritized and
protected. The organization will continue to advocate for stronger regulations and
enforcement to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.

It's World Environment Day! 🌏
This year’s campaign focuses on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience. As the climate crisis unfurls, so does the devastating effects of disastrous weather patterns. Drought and farm land desiccation are some of the most pressing issues facing Thailand agricultural sector and tropical rainforest associated wildlife. While much work is needed to fully slow the effects of global warming, there is a lot to celebrate and be grateful for on this day. 🙏🌿

“The Search for Leopard Sharks - the path towards understanding and conservation”, TDEX DIVER'S TALK 2024 on Friday, May 17th from 16.30-17.15 p.m. at the TDEX Stage where we will be introducing the Spot the Leopard Shark Thailand and discussing on various engaging subjects such as:

Some highlights from our slow loris camera traps at Khaolak Merlin Resort🌿
The Love Wildlife team down in Khao Lak have teamed up with the Khao Lak Merlin Resort and to track the slow lorises in the resort to study when they are most active. These camera traps also help us check on the utilization of the rope bridges which the resort installed to help slow lorises move throughout the resort and safely cross busy roads. Thank you team!

How fortunate to have the Western Digital team join our CSR activity! 🦜
We had so much fun putting our hands together to make parrot enrichment toys and birdseed balls for our feathered friends at the Bang Phra Water Bird Breeding Center in Chonburi. Enrichment tools and toys are vital for the welfare of birds and other wildlife living in sanctuaries. These toys allow captive animals to express natural behaviors which ultimately go on to improve mental health and stimulation. Best of luck birdies!

A Malaysian Pied Fantail (Rhipidura javanica) nests in a tree in the middle of a pool near the Veranda Restaurant at Khao Lak Merlin Resort. These little guys are incredibly active birds, constantly moving when foraging and will occasionally feed near or on ground.

New mangrove trees have gone down at Koh Mun Nai, Rayong to further protect the island's coastline and provide greater habitat for brackish water and marine animals. On Thai Mangrove Community Forests Day, let us remember and dedicate our resources to protecting and conserving our mangrove forests for local communities and wildlife.

March 13, 2023 (Bangkok, Thailand) – WildAid and Love Wildlife Foundation submitted an open letter to the President of the National Assembly of Thailand to seek their urgent attention and action to cease serving and consuming shark fin at Parliament House and on celebratory occasions.

This call comes after Dr.Tossaporn Serirak, a Member of Parliament from Phrae Province, and House of Representatives’ Chairman of the Standing Committee on Public Health, shared a public post on his personal page on the 29th of February 2024 with a photo of shark fin soup being ladled into a bowl accompanied with the text: “In the ocean there are sharks, in the parliament there are... Should the Parliament House serve shark fin soup to members of the parliament ? Stop catering food to MPs and Senators.”

Both organizations, whose work is dedicated to reducing demand for sharks in Thailand, aim to raise awareness amongst Thailand’s Parliament about the harmful effects of shark-based dish consumption and the critical role sharks play in marine ecosystems. The inclusion of shark fin on menus contributes to the decline of global shark populations and poses a significant threat to essential marine balance. Therefore, we would like to ask for the cooperation from parliament to create a new standard to abide by desisting to serve shark fin at parliament and government banquets on all occasions to take the lead in protecting marine resources.

To be a positive role model for Thai people and create a forward-thinking international image.

องค์กรทั้งสองในฐานะองค์กรที่ดำเนินโครงการเพื่ออนุรักษ์ฉลามต้องการสร้างความตระหนักต่อรัฐสภาถึงผลกระทบของการบริโภคเมนูที่ทำจากฉลาม ทั้งนี้ การเสิร์ฟเมนูหูฉลามเป็นการสนับสนุนการบริโภคสัตว์ที่มีความสำคัญต่อระบบนิเวศในทะเล ซึ่งความต้องการบริโภคเป็น 1 ในภัยคุกคามหลักที่ทำให้ประชากรฉลามทั่วโลกมีจำนวนลดลง และหลายชนิดพันธุ์กำลังเสี่ยงต่อการสูญพันธุ์ จึงต้องการขอความร่วมมือรัฐสภาร่วมกันสร้างบรรทัดฐานใหม่ด้วยการ ‘ฉลองไม่ฉลาม’ เลิกเสิร์ฟหูฉลามในรัฐสภาและงานเลี้ยงทางราชการ ในทุก ๆ โอกาส เพื่อเป็นผู้นำในการปกป้องทรัพยากรทางทะเล เป็นแบบอย่างที่ดีต่อคนไทย และสร้างภาพลักษณ์แง่บวกในระดับนานาชาติ
