Dove is a silly, smart, social, playful, and loving dog. Her size doesn’t stop her from being the floppiest and wiggliest girl. She is very joyful and is inherently happy. She has no fear of humans and goes out of her way to make sure every single one she sees gives her a pet.

She is learning quickly how to go from playing to calm and is responsive to correction. She is crate trained and is very comfortable sleeping in her crate for extended periods and throughout the night - she sleeps on our main floor and has no problem when we head upstairs to bed. She will let you know when it’s dinner time or close to breakfast but is generally quiet otherwise.

She is still exploring the world by using her mouth (mouths and grabbing things), but is easy to redirect with a toy or treat and is improving daily. For this reason, she would likely do best in a home with older, dog savvy children since she is strong and is still learning. We have been working on her leash skills - majority of the time she is a pretty good walker, however she will stop or turn on a dime. Additionally, she has quite a prey drive towards squirrels (rabbits too) so does try to chase them, but we’ve been redirecting with treats as we walk past them and she is able to refocus after a bit.

She is food motivated so treats are very helpful for training. We have also hand fed Dove and she is gentle when taking the food/politely waits for it. Doesn’t appear to have any resource guarding with humans - food/toys/bones as we have tested all with her. We let her off leash in our backyard and she listens fairly well - we take her to the designated bathroom area and she understands this is where to go.

Dove is starting to understand her name and responds to it, but we believe there is a lot of room to grow in recall. However her propensity to learn is there since she’s getting better daily at ‘sit’, ‘stay’, ‘come’ and some other commands. She isn’t allowed in the kitchen and she’s caught onto that very fast. She is a true pitty who loves to play, explore and adventure, but loves to post up on the couch to cuddle and relax next to you.

Dove has become a great playmate for our resident dog and they love to wrestle around the yard. We are not sure how much exposure Dove has had to other dogs in her past, but she seems to have shown a majority positive behaviour. Sometime play sessions can get intense (Dove also gets frustrated when she cannot catch our dog), but separating their play at times when needed has not been an issue. They have shared toys and bones so there doesn’t seem to be resource guarding over these items. They receive treats together and don’t get jealous, but we haven’t fed their meals side by side so unsure at this time (nothing makes us thinks this would be). She would do great in a house as a solo dog or with another social playmate.

Dove is currently on some anxiety medication as prescribed while she was at the facility - on her medication in our home we wouldn’t assume she has anxiety so it seems to be doing its job or possibly will be able to be reduced (contingent on vet assessment and approval). She has no issues taking these pills in her meals.

Despite a tough start in life, she has a heart of gold and we believe with the right amount of training and work she will improve all of the aspects she’s currently working on. If you’re looking for a gal to make you smile almost every minute of the day, then Dove is the dog for you!

Does she bark: Seldom.

Housetrained: Yes. Is learning to go to the bathroom in a specific area in the backyard

Good in car: Yes, she has fallen asleep in the car. She has not gotten car sick to date and has not shown any signs she would.

Good on leash: She is still learning that she does not need to excitedly pull during walks, but through training, we expect she will learn. She does look at herself as a neighborhood defender against squirrels and other critters, so the walker just needs to be aware of that.

Resource guarding: She has not shown any signs of resource guarding as we have explored this by taking food while she eats and toys/bones while she plays.

Likes: Playing with all toys, chewing on bones, snuggling, naps, food and treats.

Meet Caprese 🐾

Caprese arrived in Calgary on June 13 after making the journey from a high‑kill shelter in California—and she’s been bringing a whole lot of personality with her ever since.

This happy, high-energy girl is equal parts athlete, comedian, overgrown lapdog and professional shadow.

Caprese would thrive in an active home that can match her enthusiasm for life. She’d love a canine playmate who can keep up with her “let’s go” energy—or she could also do well as an only dog with an owner committed to keeping her mentally and physically engaged. If she does share a home with another dog, a confident companion is key, as Caprese is still learning that not every dog appreciates her full-contact play style.

Right now, Caprese coexists with the resident dog under supervision. She’s still figuring out social cues—specifically that “please stop” actually means stop—but she’s a smart girl who is learning every day.

House training: Mostly there! Caprese has had a few accidents but does best with routine—especially quick access to the outdoors right after waking up or being kenneled for a few hours.

Kennel: Not her favourite place - she may need a lift to get there, but she settles after a few minutes and can sleep through the night.

Sleeping arrangements: Currently living her best life as a part-time bed hog, but is capable of sleeping in her kennel if needed.

Food & toys: No resource guarding; polite treat taker. Meals are currently separated simply due to the resident dog’s priorities (food = life).

Skills & Smarts: Caprese already knows sit, shake, wait, leave it, and “this way”—and she’s eager to keep learning. She’s motivated to please and responds well to structure and positive reinforcement.

Activity Level (AKA: Built for Fun): Caprese is athletic, agile, and ready for action. Long walks are her jam—and she will absolutely let you know if she thinks it wasn’t long enough (think: dramatic door refusal that ends in a carry-in es**rt).

She would love activities like:

Fetch (RIP tennis balls… they don’t last long)

Puzzle toys

Outdoor adventures

Anything that involves moving, thinking, or both

Walks & Adventures: She can be a bit skittish when strangers approach her. She is working on her leash manners and does quite well—until something small, furry, or feathered appears. With a high prey drive, Caprese is a no cats, no small critters kind of gal.

If she spots outdoor critters before you do, expect a full performance: jumping, pulling, spinning, crying—basically like a die-hard fan spotting their celebrity. If you spot it them in advance and start correcting, she’s much more receptive and only puts on a 1-2 star performance.

She also gets excited when she sees other dogs and becomes reactive if they begin to bark at her, so continued socialization with slow introductions and training will be important. She’s the type of dog that would bounce on a trampoline or pull you on a skateboard.

Quirks & Comedy Highlights: Caprese comes with a built-in entertainment package that includes:

Zoomies that appear out of nowhere

Olympic-level bunny/squirrel/bird tracking

Creative “interpretations” of how stairs should be used (including enthusiastic wall-assisted descents)

Interesting stretches that result commando crawling

Nuzzling and burying toys like she’s hiding treasure

Insisting she is, in fact, a lapdog

Cobbing, butt scratches, and pool parties (non-negotiable joys)

Ideal Home: Caprese would do best in a home that:

Can match her energy and provide daily exercise and mental stimulation

Offers structure, consistency, and continued training

Has no cats or small animals

May include a confident dog or older children who are comfortable with an enthusiastic, bouncy companion

Has a fenced yard

The Heart of It All: Caprese is a sweet, affectionate, velcro dog who just wants to be close to her people. Although she is a high energy girl, she is more than happy to lounge around and lay with you while you watch a movie. Whether you're on the couch, doing chores, or heading out, she’s there and obviously didn’t get the memo about personal space.

She’s a joyful, goofy girl that’s ready to find her people. With the right mix of patience, structure, and love, she’s going to be an incredibly loyal, loving and fun companion to the right family.

🐾 HELP OUR LITTLEST FIGHTERS BREATHE 🐾

We need your help. 💔

A particularly nasty strain of kennel cough has made its way through our facility, and unfortunately, it has hit our youngest litter of puppies especially hard.

Every dog at the facility has required medication to help them fight through this illness. But for two of our little babies, kennel cough has progressed into pneumonia, and they are currently at the emergency veterinary hospital receiving treatment.

These tiny puppies are fighting hard. ❤️‍🩹

Pneumonia in puppies is serious, and they require antibiotics, intensive monitoring and round-the-clock care. They will likely need to remain hospitalized for at least two days, and we don’t yet know what their final veterinary bill will be.

So far, we have already spent more than $5,000 treating the dogs affected by this outbreak, including the medications needed for the dogs at our facility and the emergency care for our puppies.

And the bills are continuing to climb.

As a rescue, unexpected emergency veterinary expenses like this can put an enormous strain on our ability to continue helping dogs in need. But we aren’t going to let these little ones go without the care they need. We just need our village to help us get them through it. 🐾

💔 Two puppies are currently fighting pneumonia.
💊 All of our facility dogs have required treatment.
🏥 More than $5,000 has already been spent.
❤️ And these babies still need us.
