Did you know the original name of Stuart was "Potsdam"? 📬
According to a history recorded by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in 1936, Walter Kitching asked the Florida East Coast Railway, after donating land for the depot, to change the town's name, but requested that his own name not be associated with the change.
The post office officially changed the name to Stuart on June 15, 1895. This fascinating piece of local history is preserved through Martin Digital History, a participatory archive dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Martin County and the Treasure Coast.

Happy National Moonshine Day! 🗓️
In this 1955 photograph, Sheriff Roy Baker and another officer dispose of alcohol confiscated from an illegal still operation. During the early and mid-20th century, law enforcement officers throughout Florida regularly investigated moonshine production, which often took place in remote areas away from public view.
Historic photographs like this one help preserve lesser-known chapters of local history. Martin Digital History is a participatory archive that brings together historic photographs, documents, and stories contributed by the community.
