👀 Check out the latest progress at Charlie Leighton Park! 🚧 The transformation continues with new waterfront docks, scenic overlooks, native landscaping and improved public spaces all coming together. Every detail is bringing this waterfront park one step closer to completion. Stay tuned as we continue making progress!

🎣 ELECTROFISHING SURVEY 🐠 Our Environmental Resource Division recently partnered with fisheries biologists from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to conduct an electrofishing survey in the South Fork of the St. Lucie River.

The survey found a healthy fish community, with native species greatly outnumbering non-native invasive fish. During the survey, invasive tilapia and armored catfish were removed to help protect the river's ecosystem.

Electrofishing is a safe and effective scientific sampling method that temporarily stuns fish so biologists can identify, measure, and release them while collecting important data about the health of our waterways.

We'll continue monitoring the South Fork and other waterways throughout Martin County to track changes in fish populations and guide future conservation efforts.🐠

🐜 BUGGING OUT WITH 4-H! 🦟 Our Mosquito Control Division welcomed Martin County 4-H campers this week for an exciting insect adventure! Campers got an up close look at fascinating bugs, learned how to identify different mosquito species, discovered the diseases mosquitoes can spread, explored our Sentinel Chicken Program, and picked up simple tips to help prevent mosquitoes from breeding around their homes.

Hands on learning like this helps inspire the next generation of scientists, environmental stewards, and community leaders. 🦟🔬

4-H is the nation's largest youth development organization, providing hands on learning opportunities for young people

🌿 PRESERVING TODAY. PROTECTING TOMORROW. 🌍 Martin County has acquired the environmentally sensitive Elise J. property, located in the Pal Mar area, preserving 322 acres of pristine cypress swampland from future development through the voter-approved sales tax land acquisition program.

This important acquisition helps protect wildlife habitat, water resources, and the natural beauty that defines Martin County.

🌱 NATIVE PLANTINGS 🌱 Work is underway to restore a 2.5 acre section of Jimmy Graham Park as part of the Maritime Hammock Restoration Project. Funded by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the project began with the removal of invasive Australian pines to make way for dozens of native trees and plants, including live oaks, gumbo limbo, wild coffee, saw palmetto, beautyberry, fiddlewood, and other native species. Once complete, the restored maritime hammock will provide important wildlife habitat, increase biodiversity, and help return the area to its natural ecosystem.

When temperatures soar, the work doesn’t stop. 🌡️☀️
