Since 2023, Little Dog Rescue has been renting vans to transport our dogs—and while those rental vans have helped us get hundreds of dogs where they need to go, we’re ready for something of our own.

A rescue van means safer transportation, quicker response when dogs need us, less money spent on rentals, and a dedicated space for everything rescue throws our way. Most importantly, it means we can spend more of our resources on the dogs—not on renting a vehicle.

🐕⛩️🏮Update on China Dogs 🏮⛩️🐕

We are still in observation stage with the adults at the base The Pom was struggling & is now at the vet clinic showing tiny signs of improvement Several other pups have started coughing Auntie Hu is working hard to separate out the coughing dogs

For the puppy group at the vet hospital it is not so good We have now lost 6 of the village puppies & the taped ears chi puppy These puppies all were parvo + & carrying heavy parasite loads 7 parvo puppies remain 2 critical & 5 no longer declining Prognosis is gaurded for all parvo puppies.
The CCV and remaining puppies are doing ok Many have developed a cough & snotty nose their appetites are varied with some still needing to be force fed All are dealing with lots of worms & diarrhea The good news is no additional puppies have broken with parvo And the tiny white poodle missing a foot will be released Our rescue partner @郑安燃 will be fostering him in her home

We have a love/hate relationship with China. On one hand we absolutely love our rescue partners and all of the good people of China working hard to make things better for the animals. On the other hand we loathe the lack of protections and the horrific conditions many dogs and cats live in.

Today unfortunately has been a struggle and we are completely overwhelmed with what we just went through. We went to the pet market to get leashes and harnesses knowing we would see dog sellers. Most of the sellers have purebreds and they are very clean and healthy looking. And then there are the stalls in the back….

We started this morning by stealing a tiny puppy that was in a bucket. There was a plastic lid on top weighed down with a rock and the bucket was left in the blazing sun it was 86°. When we got him out there was another puppy in the bucket that had already passed.

Along the back end of the market were cages filled with adult dogs all in filthy rough shape….most likely breeder dogs The cages were crowded with no sign of food or water. Then we came to a super grimy stall with cages of tiny mixed breed “village puppies” several looked like they were barely hanging on. How do you unsee suffering like this? How do you keep walking by knowing those would all be dead dogs in the next 24hrs?

So we started with buying the puppies. For 60rmb (about $9) each….for a total of 24 puppies. Bought cages gave them food and water and ordered a DiDi (uber) to pick them up and take them to the vet.

Then we moved over to the long row of cages with the adults dogs Things went completely sideways with more people than we can count coming up to us shoving dogs in our face trying to get us to buy them and some just wanted us to take them off their hands We prioritized the old ones and the broken ones, the shy ones and some friendly poodles and had to stop saying yes when we hit 40 dogs.
After buying even more crates we got all the adults and the older poodle puppies loaded onto a different DiDi headed to our rescue partners base on the other side of Chengdu As the van was pulling off a guy ran up to up with an older Pom momma and put her in the van When we are this far upside down what’s one more?

Then it was off to the vet to check the status of our puppies
13 parvo +
7 corona virus +
3 healthy (including the bucket puppy)
1 healthy but missing a lower hind leg and foot
The one positive in all this misery is that they are really good at treating parvo in China. Also vet care in China is far less expensive than in US. One week of hospitalization with IV treatments several times a day will cost about 1000rmb ($148). The clinic was able to get immediate delivery of the monoclonal antibody treatment and we are praying that we acted fast enough to save these babies. We left a 15,000rmb ($2200) deposit with the vet clinic to cover the puppies care for the next 6 days.

We have been at this for 8hrs straight today. It’s exhausting, dirty, heartbreaking work We are grateful to be here doing this work. And even more grateful for our rescue partners here who have to negotiate this level of suffering every single unrelenting day.

They come into your life and somehow become your dog. The one you can’t imagine life without. The one who changes you, makes you laugh, gets you through hard days, and leaves a permanent paw print on your heart.

In rescue, we see this happen all the time.

A dog comes in needing a home, and somewhere along the way, they become a heart dog.

That’s the magic of rescue. ❤️

This National Dog Day, we’re celebrating all the heart dogs out there — the ones who are with us, the ones who have gone before us, and the ones still waiting to find their person.

Sometimes in rescue we have to make split second decisions on saying yes to a dog in need. That was the case with Button. This sweet one year old girl was brought in to the municipal shelter in Kerman CA with what they thought was an embedded collar. With no vet on staff and no budget for outside vet care the shelter has to immediately get a rescue commitment or opt to euthanize.

The first video we received you could see her tail wagging despite the horrific injury around her head and neck. By the grace of God we were able to secure a spot on a transport heading to Seattle the very next day.

Button arrived last night and was on the surgery table by 8:30 am this morning.
While being shaved down and evaluated a tiny whitish band of foreign material was observed deep inside the open wound. A rubber band is what caused all this carnage on this pup.
It took close to 3 hours in surgery to get this wound cleaned up, multiple drains placed and stitched back up. The wound was so deep that it ran an infection track into her right ear that was filled with puss.

We currently have 3 medically complex dogs in the rescue. All 3 dumped at municipal shelters as strays All 3 good natured affectionate deserving dogs. We have been working hard to save money to buy our own van. Every time we get a little nest egg put aside we end up needing the funds for complex medical cases. No regrets the dogs are always worth the expense. We are thankful that we were able to say yes to Button….the van will come.

Buttons prognosis is good. She will have the drains in for a week and be reevaluated next Friday to make sure the wound is healing. She is a 7 # playful, affectionate, spicy girl with an indomitable spirit. She will be ready for her forever home in aprox 2 weeks if all goes well.

This morning we welcomed Lulu into the rescue. She comes to us from SEAACA shelter in Downey CA. Lulu was on the euthanasia list and had less than 24hrs left and NO ONE was coming for her. Lulu’s body tells a story of extreme medical neglect. Every body system is struggling….bilateral otitis so bad her ears are bleeding, missing and rotting teeth “necrotic K9’s”, crusty infected eyes due to dry eye, stiff labored gait in rear legs due to suspected arthritis, severe atopic dermatitis with scabs, open sores, saliva staining, and missing patches of hair. This poor girl has to feel miserable.

Lulu could be the poster pup for why low cost/no cost adoptions do not serve the best interest of dogs. Lulu has a microchip. She was adopted from a municipal shelter in So Cal. She spent several years in a home receiving ZERO medical care only to be dumped back into that same shelter system when her body was at the point of collapse from the neglect. Dog ownership is a privilege not a right. With that privilege comes the responsibility to meet that dogs needs…basic care, emotional needs and medical needs. Vet care is expensive and access to affordable vet care is an issue for many. Just because an owner can’t afford it does not absolve them from the responsibility to meet that need. Good intentions are not enough. Had Lulu’s normal issues that come with aging been addressed as they arose she wouldn’t be suffering in this horrific condition.

We are already over $1600 in on her transport and medical expenses. Still ahead for her is a grooming appt (happening today), vet exam (tomorrow), full dental with extractions tbd, and medical plan to manage her heart condition and arthritis. Lulu is aprox 10-12 yrs old and worth every single penny of what it will take to get her well. She is a quiet, no shed, easy going, sweet natured, low energy pup. She deserves to be someone’s princess and companion for the remainder of her years. Lulu will be available for adoption once we get all of her medical sorted out and managed. Senior dogs give you their whole hearts and are grateful just to be by your side. I swear we as humans do not deserve the goodness of dogs.
