The Thank You Democracy podcast is returning with a new season that takes democracy on the road, across regions, contexts, and lived realities. Season 4 will explore how democracy is experienced today, where it is holding strong, where it is under pressure, and how it continues to evolve around the world.
To kick off this season, we sat down with Friedenwald-Fishman, the Creative Director of the Group and coordinator of the Pro-Democracy Narrative Playbook, to dive into the power of storytelling and narrative change in shaping how people understand, value, and defend democracy, drawing on decades of experience building public will across movements and regions. Through personal stories, global insights, and new research and tools developed by the Pro-Democracy Narrative Playbook team, he explores why democracy must be intentionally defined, communicated, and renewed, especially in the face of rising authoritarian narratives.

Authoritarians are adept at using narratives to legitimize autocratic actions and sow fear, distrust, and division. But we can and must advance powerful narratives that both counter these attacks and give people something to believe in and support.
Our CEO, Eric Friedenwald-Fishman, recently co-authored a guest editorial in The Chronicle of Philanthropy with Shannon Green, CEO of Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement (PACE). The piece highlights new research conducted across 12 countries on 5 continents, including the U.S., which mapped the imbalance in today’s narrative landscape and identified effective, evidence-based pro-democracy narratives.
Their editorial underscores the urgent need for narrative infrastructure to help nonprofits and movements engage broad constituencies, counter authoritarian narratives, and build shared understanding and support for democracy. Read the full Op-Ed and share your thoughts:
