As Nurses Week comes to an end, we would like to share a little introspective into why our nurse, Sam, chose this career path:
When I was 10, my grandmother and myself along with a few others were in an accident involving a drunk driver. My grandmother was the most extensively injured with several broken bones. She spent several weeks in ICU, and although I was not old enough to visit her, I would still go up there and sit outside the door. My grandmother was my person, and the one that I held in highest regard. After she left the ICU she was home for less than 24 hours and sustained a CVA ( stroke) and was placed on hospice, as they did not see her recovering from this. As a young child, I spent several weeks at that hospice community, talking to her and trying to prepare myself for something I didn’t really understand. The nurses and staff at both the hospital ICU and the hospice community treated her like family, they sang to her and myself while giving her a bed bath, they talked to her while giving her the medication that kept her comfortable. They talked to me like they knew me my whole life and gave me an understanding of what it means to care for someone. The day she passed they sat next to us and comforted us while they silently cried themselves. That was the day I decided what I wanted to do, and that giving someone else what they gave me by caring so deeply for someone I loved so much. This year will be 11 years that I have been a nurse and I still love what I do and think about those who showed me what this role means. 💜 ❤️
We appreciate you Sam!” “ Nurse (def): just another word to describe a person strong enough to tolerate everything and soft enough to understand everyone.” —Unknown
