BREAKING: Enbridge is illegally building a bypass to restart Line 5 after last month's hazardous spill. In a letter yesterday, the DNR rebuked the company over a "growing list of environmental concerns and violations" at Line 5 and called for a halt to bypass construction.

Clean Wisconsin attorney Evan Feinauer says the letter is unusual and should cause real concern about Enbridge’s activities in the Northwoods.

"This letter is alarming. You just don't typically see a DNR Secretary speak in these terms,” says Feinauer. “It’s clear the Department is incredibly frustrated and concerned by Enbridge's actions, which appear to be illegal. According to the DNR, Enbridge is rushing to start construction on a temporary bypass of the broken section of its pipeline, and it’s doing this work without the required permits and approvals needed to protect our environment.”

Federal funding for Great Lakes restoration faces Sept. 30 deadline What comes next will decide whether communities can count on federal support for new Great Lakes cleanup and restoration projects.

This may be the largest reported oil and gas pipeline spill in Wisconsin history. But the public remains in the dark about the extent of the environmental and public health harm. On August 25, Canadian oil giant Enbridge spilled more than 1.3 million gallons of hazardous natural gas liquids in Iron County, forcing evacuations in the area. The company is now working to burn off about 5,000 barrels of toxic chemicals on the site.

A number of key public health questions remain unanswered:

➡️What are the potential impacts to Lake Superior from this breach?

➡️How much of the chemicals were released as liquid versus v***r?

➡️Was there any oversight during Enbridge’s incident response by the EPA? Was there any state oversight?

➡️What specific chemicals volatilized into the atmosphere as air pollution, and what are the known environmental harms of this air pollution?
