Parents! If your student is interested in learning a string instrument, consider joining Prelude 1! This weekly class is open to any students 3rd grade and above. For $150 you get the use of an instrument, plus a year's worth of instruction, field trips, special workshops, concerts, and (oh yeah!) a T-shirt!

Students improve their strings at Decatur Youth Symphony summer camp When he was 12, Trent Dumas heard a man playing a violin in a Decatur parking lot and fell in love with the instrument.

Decatur Youth Symphony to seek own building using state funding The Decatur Youth Symphony will start looking for a space to call its own using money from the state after operating without its own building for more than 20 years.

Drumming into our spring concert with excitement!!

Decatur Youth Symphony students kicked off their bus tour at Ben Davis elementary school this morning at 8 AM! We are spending the school day traveling to different elementary schools in Decatur performing music from our spring concert repertoire! This is one of the most exciting event of the year for us.

It was a privilege to join the Decatur Youth Symphony Board yesterday with a donation from the Community Foundation of Decatur and briefly discuss the substantial budget appropriation made this past legislative session. DYS has never had a place of its own as it serves young musicians from multiple counties in north Alabama who come from all walks of life and travel substantial distances to participate. They’ve had to shuttle from site to site. (Several years ago we helped with a van to help with shuttling many of the instruments.) The vision is to get practice space, storage space and even host smaller concerts. Such a facility would impact the many hundreds that participate each year and thousands for the years to come. Young musicians are many times overlooked and it’s encouraging to see the leaders committed to finding a place of their own!
