As I sit here at the office on this quiet Saturday morning (which is unusual because I usually only get about 5-6 Saturdays a year off), I am hoping that my students are doing their best on the ACT. This past testing cycle has been one of the most difficult ones in my professional career. Not only were there literally 4 different testing dates, which made scheduling a logistical nightmare, but the limited amount of resources with the thew format and ACT’s lack of transparency regarding the roll out of this new format have made my job a real challenge. Our results on the last couple of tests tell me that we might just be figuring out this new format after all, though, as our results have been great! It wasn’t really the work, though, that made this cycle so challenging. As many of you know, I lost my sister to cancer just a few weeks ago. My sister Amy was my partner in education. She started teaching me before I could walk and got me my first job teaching ACT and SAT classes some 25 years ago. We both shared a passion for helping others and for being an educator. We bounced ideas off one another and shared the inevitable ups and downs that go with teaching. With her gone, it just isn’t the same. I want to pick up the phone to call her and tell her about the student that just got that 30 they had been aiming for or about the changes I ‘m making to my curriculum, but, I know she wouldn’t answer because she has moved on to a better place. In so may ways, Amy was my sounding board and my voice of reason when it came to teaching… I’m going to miss her sound advice and the many stories she would tell me of the kids in her classes. I’m going to miss dressing up as the mystery guest and driving out to her school to see if her students could figure out who I am…. But, most of all, I am just going to miss my sister. For those of you that I worked with over the past few months, a huge thank you for your patience and kind words of encouragement. I am not sure that teaching will ever be the same for me with her gone, but I do know that I must trudge on as I endeavor to honor her legacy by continuing to inspire our young people to strive to do their best. She was always my #1 fan, telling me that I was right where I was supposed to be, so maybe she was right… I just wish I could tell her that!

I don’t usually put a lot of personal stuff on here, but this is my Dear sister Amy… my first teacher! I say that because I knew from the time I could walk that she was going to become a teacher. I was always ahead in school because she would teach me everything she had learned that year over the summer! She has been an absolutely amazing elementary school teacher for 20+ years!!!

We are excited to see the scores from the December ACT when they get released this week. I couldn’t be prouder of the effort my students put in to prepare themselves for this test. I can’t wait to see all of that hard work pay off! It has been a tumultuous year for It’s a Test Thing… to say the least! Moving offices in the middle of the year and trying to keep up with the biggest changes in the history of ACT has not been easy! I am excited, however, about the future. I have spent the last several months analyzing at great length the new format of the ACT and am excited about implementing some new strategies that will better prepare students to do their best when they take the test. In the coming weeks, we will be launching brand new instructional material that better reflects the ACT in its current format. I am also incorporating a number of changes to our ACT class curriculum and the way that I tutor students for the ACT. Now that finals have wrapped up, I encourage anyone that has any questions about the new ACT or about the many changes that colleges and universities are making to the college admissions and scholarships process to reach out to me directly. Now would be a great time to schedule a consult where I could explain the new format and how the ACT is and will continue to be used as a tool for college admissions and scholarship consideration. It’s a Test Thing… remains committed to making sure that we do everything in our power to make sure that your son or daughter is prepared to do their best when they take the ACT. As we wrap up 2025 and get geared up for another year, we hope that you will continue to entrust us with assisting your sons or daughters in preparation for the ACT and in helping them navigate through the whole college admission and scholarship application process. I can’t wait to launch our classes for the February test with brand new material and new activities to make our classes the best they have ever been! If you have any questions about these classes or about any of the services that we provide, please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly at [email protected] or 256-684-2789.
I don’t post as often on here as I should, but every so often I feel compelled to pass on some news or thoughts about the ACT, my students or just life in general. With tomorrow being Thanksgiving, I can’t help but feel like this might just be one of those times. I have found that when things seem bleak, the best thing we can do to find that ray of hope we so desperately need is to go spend some time helping someone else. It still amazes me how small my problems become when my focus isn’t on myself but others. I am very blessed to be able to do this every day. I sometimes wish that my friends and family could spend just one day with me to see how amazing these students that I get to work with are. They continue to inspire me and show me that despite the pessimism pervading the airwaves, the future is bright. I get to see students with ambition, dedication, and a willingness to put in the work to achieve their dreams every day. I still can’t believe that my business will be celebrating 13 years in business in a few months. Who would have ever thought that I would be able to help so many amazing students! Some 2,000+ students and over 50 high schools later, I would like to think that we are making a difference. That infectious optimism and eternal pursuit of positivity that I share with my students will never fade… it is who I am! And, God willing I will be able to continue guiding these students for another decade or longer. I hope that the countless number of families that have entrusted me with helping their sons and daughters in pursuit of their dreams know how truly grateful I am for that trust. I saw an old email of mine the other day, and I noticed the tagline that I used to include at the bottom of each email…. May my actions speak so loudly that you can hardly hear what I am saying… and as most people know, I have a lot to say!!! Still true….
