Often people think “glamorous” when in fact the only thing glamorous is your passion. Outside people do not understand this business they equate it to other league professional sports , and it os not AT ALL like that.

Yes promoters pay for hotel and some food (per diems are too low these days) and you get to witness events. That doesn’t translate to paying your bills. It just means you travel to places you might otherwise not gone.

Its a profession where there are no guaranteed contracts, a 10% purse win (which usually management or a fighter try to negotiate down into a flat fee after a fighter is making millions) It is quickly forgotten how at times in beginning career of a fighter the coach gets nothing but his meals covered or what is 10% of 4 grand when you been many months of 2 hours a day training. Again its a passion, and a responsibility for the athletes lives which are grossly underpaid, I don’t say undervalued but underpaid. Many times these days managers do not give monthly coaching stipends. I have been fortunate that managers I have worked with understand and usually work with me.

Its tough even when you got a hot prospects it takes years to get in the “money” fights.

So you ask why do I do it. I happen to have proven I do the job well, as many others do also. Its our passion, we love to see our athletes do well, we love to be part of the journeys in their careers.

Most fighters also do not have the money to take care of their coaches, not because they don’t want too, they just don’t. It is also an uphill battle for 90% of them. Again no guarantees, no unions, and if you are fortunate enough to have a major promoter behind you , they can cut you from their promotional house anytime . No pay out / off of your contract or severances.

Most people don’t understand the sacrifice, those fighters and coaches that do it well can be just making it, but they are there because its in the soul. Its an ability most people in the world could not do at a high level , and by that I mean for both coaching and fighting .
