People often ask me what the greatest lesson was from my butler training in the UK.

There were many, but the one that has stayed with me throughout my career is this, we do not automatically accept that something cannot be done.

In private service, “no” should rarely be our first response. We give of ourselves generously, anticipate what is needed, and quietly find a way to make the seemingly impossible possible, with no fuss, no fanfare, and without seeking recognition.

The training was never simply about folding napkins or serving a formal dinner. It was about understanding that exceptional service should feel effortless. When you have planned carefully, paid attention to the smallest details, and thought several steps ahead, people may never notice everything you have done. They will simply feel comfortable, cared for, and completely at ease.

That is the standard I have carried with me throughout my career, and it remains one of the most important lessons I can pass on to anyone entering the private service industry.

Have you ever stayed somewhere that instantly made you feel comfortable?

More often than not, it isn't because of anything extravagant. It's the thoughtful details that leave a lasting impression.

A returning guest arrives and discovers their favorite newspaper waiting at breakfast because someone remembered a comment from their last visit. An umbrella is standing by the door on a rainy morning. A hot toddy is ready after a chilly day spent riding horses. Even something as simple as finding your reading glasses cleaned, with a lens wipe thoughtfully left beside them, can make a guest feel genuinely cared for.

Whether in a luxury hotel, aboard a yacht, or in a private residence, exceptional service is built on observation, anticipation, and attention to detail. It's remembering preferences, listening carefully, and taking action before a request is ever made.

The warm welcome, the genuine smile, and the acknowledgment that someone is expected and valued often mean more than any grand gesture.

In my experience, those small touches are what transform a stay into a memorable experience.

"Clothes maketh the man."

Perhaps the same could be said of the traditional butler.

Few homes today require a butler or house manager to wear the classic uniform of tailcoat, waistcoat, and pinstriped trousers. Yet there is something to be said for the pride and professionalism that comes with dressing for the role.

I experienced this firsthand while working as a head steward aboard a yacht in the South of France. While the crews on neighboring yachts wore shorts and polo shirts in the 90-degree Mediterranean heat, my principal insisted I wear full butler attire.

At the time, it felt slightly insane.

But standing on the dock in Monte Carlo, I knew our crew looked exceptional. More importantly, I carried myself differently. I stood a little taller, paid greater attention to detail, and understood that I was representing something larger than myself.

When people hear the word "butler," they often picture silver trays, formal attire, and strict etiquette. While those skills still have their place, today's butlers and house managers are often responsible for much more. They coordinate vendors, oversee property maintenance, manage household staff, arrange travel, and keep complex households operating seamlessly.

The fundamentals, however, remain unchanged: professionalism, discretion, attention to detail, and exceptional service.

The uniform may have evolved, but the standards never should.
