🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Michael Benoit, Assistant Professor in our Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering, who has been named to Canada's Top 40 Under 40® for 2026 — one of the country's most recognized honours for young leaders!

Benoit's research focuses on sustainable, high-performance metallic materials for welding, joining and additive manufacturing — including ways to use lower-purity, more sustainable aluminum without the cracking that usually comes with it. He's a core member of Waterloo's Centre for Advanced Materials Joining and the MSAM Lab, Associate Director of WatCAR, and has published more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles.

"It's an honour to receive this recognition," said Benoit. "To me, it's not just about individual achievement — it also celebrates the students, colleagues and collaborators who make meaningful work possible."

He'll receive the award at the Top 40 Awards Night in Toronto on October 21.

Most grad students pick a supervisor they've never met. David Carciente didn't have to. He spent a summer working with his, before he ever even applied for his master's at Waterloo Engineering.

In 2024, as a Concordia undergrad, he joined the first cohort of Waterloo Engineering's Rising Stars fellowship, a paid summer research program for undergraduates. When the fellowship was over, he knew his lab, the Vision and Image Processing Group, and the people within. It was this familiar ground that motivated him to return for his grad studies.

He's one of seven Rising Stars fellows — out of 45 since 2024 — who've returned to Waterloo for grad school.

A new student design team at Waterloo Engineering is tackling one of computing's toughest disciplines: high-performance computing.

Computer engineering students James Redekopp and Karl Keshavarzi founded UW High Performance Computing (UWHPC) this year within the Sedra Student Design Centre. Their first project: a high-performance Variational Monte Carlo simulation for quantum systems, built from scratch in C++. Next term, the team moves into machine learning systems and GPU optimization.

UWHPC is recruiting now for Fall 2026 — no HPC experience required. "Technical concepts can be taught," said co-founder Keshavarzi. "The motivation to dig deeper is what we really look for."
