📅 | A traveling outdoor installation, March 10, 9am - 5pm

All are welcome to join us tomorrow as Métis artist Tracey-Mae Chambers installs her work on the greenspace in front of East Campus Hall.

"The goal of is to broach the subject of decolonization. Many (but not all) of these public spaces serve to present a colonial viewpoint and primarily speak about the settlers who arrived and lived here, but not the Indigenous people that were displaced along the way. The decolonization of such places is a ponderous task and must be shouldered collectively. The discussion of reconciliation and decolonization is hard to start and harder still to maintain. Therefore, I am hoping to use my work to help bridge the gap between settlers and Indigenous, Métis, and Inuit people by creating art that is approachable and non-confrontational so we can start"

Wishing a joyous and warm Kwanzaa to all those who celebrate!

We have found great local resources and events to support a joyous Kwanzaa 2021 with friends and family:

The Family & Children Services (FACS) of the Waterloo Region have put together the “Kwanzaa, a Celebration of Family, Community, and Culture” webpage that features fact/information sheets on the traditions and principles of Kwanzaa. Learn more here: https://loom.ly/1Nz1LyA

The Waterloo Public Library has provided a take and make craft kit where you can make your own paper kinara and light a "candle" each day to celebrate Kwanzaa. Learn more here: https://loom.ly/RtDJx3w

In honour of Kwanzaa, on December 26th at 7pm, for the 15th year, the Apollo Theater will bring families and communities together for a global celebration of culture, tradition, ritual, and community with Abdel R. Salaam’s Forces of Nature Dance Theatre, and host Imhotep Gary Byrd! Register (donate what you can) here: https://www.apollotheaters.org/event/kwanzaa-celebration-2021/

❤️ 🖤 💚 About Kwanzaa:

Created by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966 to celebrate family, faith, culture and heritage. The celebration is modeled after first harvest celebrations in Africa.

There are 7 Principles and 7 Primary Symbols that emphasize a unique set of values and ideals during the 7 days of Kwanzaa.

7 Principles of Kwanzaa:
1. Umoja (unity)
2. Kujichagulia (self-determination)
3. Ujima (collective responsibility)
4. Ujamaa (Cooperation)
5. Nia (purpose)
6. Kuumba (creativity)
7. Imani (faith)

⭐ 🎄 🕯️ Wishing a happy, healthy, and joyful Christmas for all those that are celebrating. May this season be filled with peace, compassion, and kindness!

Photos from EDI-R UWaterloo's post 12/06/2021

On Dec 6th 1989, a man entered a mechanical engineering class at École Polytechnique and killed fourteen women (twelve engineering students, one nursing student, and one employee of the university) in the name of "fighting feminism."

We remember each of the 14 women who were murdered:

Geneviève Bergeron
Hélène Colgan
Nathalie Croteau
Barbara Daigneault
Anne-Marie Edward
Maud Haviernick
Maryse Laganière
Maryse Leclair
Anne-Marie Lemay
Sonia Pelletier
Michèle Richard
Annie St-Arneault
Annie Turcotte
Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz

And, we acknowledge the ongoing trauma faced by survivors, while we recommit to end gender-based violence in all its forms.

An update from the new Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-racism office | Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion 12/03/2021

A message from the Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism (EDI-R) to our community:

https://uwaterloo.ca/human-rights-equity-inclusion/news/update-new-equity-diversity-inclusion-and-anti-racism-office

"We are grateful for the time and energies that the campus community so generously gave to the external review committee: sharing experiences, frustrations, hopes, and—importantly—being an essential catalyst for the changes we are seeing and will see in the future.

We know that we have work to do to (re)build trust and to foster strong relationships across this campus. Our commitments outlined here are just a start. We will be accountable. We will be accessible. We will be responsive. We will be leaders in equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-racism, but we need you to be co-leaders with us. This is the work of every person on campus, and we are excited to create the space and opportunity for collaboration and community."

An update from the new Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-racism office | Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion The new office of Equity Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-racism (EDI-R) is excited to share plans and commitments developed in response to the Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion (HREI) organizational review report (PDF), which was shared with the campus community in October 2021.
