Remembering September 11, 2001 — 25 Years Later


Our nation marks the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001 — a day that forever changed America.

Remembering the 2,977 innocent lives lost at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, the families who were left behind, the firefighters, police officers, first responders, military members, and ordinary citizens who ran toward danger while others were running away.



We remember something else; who we were and are as a nation in the days that followed. For a brief time, the things that divided us seemed smaller than the things that united us. We stood together. We helped our neighbors. We displayed the American flag. We looked out for one another. We remembered that before we are Republicans or Democrats, conservatives or liberals, we are Americans.

Today, we ask our community to pause and remember the moments of that morning:



8:46 a.m. — American Airlines Flight 11 strikes the North Tower

9:03 a.m. — United Airlines Flight 175 strikes the South Tower.

9:37 a.m. — American Airlines Flight 77 strikes the Pentagon

9:59 a.m. — The South Tower collapses

10:03 a.m. — The passengers of United Airlines Flight 93 fight back, and the aircraft crashes near Shanksville, Pennsylvania

10:28 a.m. — The North Tower collapses.

Let this anniversary remind us that patriotism is more than a flag or a ceremony, it is how we treat the people around us.

Take a moment of silence. Say a prayer. Remember a name.

But then do something to honor those we lost.

Wave to your neighbor.
Greet someone you pass on the street.
Thank a first responder or veteran.
Visit and care for a local cemetery.
Volunteer your time.
Help someone who needs it.
Attend a community event.
Fly the American flag.
And, most importantly, reach across the divisions that so often keep us apart.

We don't have to agree on everything to stand together.

We can debate our politics without losing our respect for one another. We can hold different beliefs while still recognizing the shared values that make us Americans.

Twenty-five years later, let us honor those we lost not only by remembering the morning that brought us together, but by choosing to come together again.

May we never forget the lives lost.
May we never forget the courage shown.
May we never forget the unity that followed.
And may we never stop working to build a stronger, kinder, more united community.

United we stand.

Freedom ball is still growing

Good afternoon. We have been notified of the concern regarding the absence of some flags at Memorial Park.

The replacement flags were ordered many months ago, well before they were needed. However, due to an issue with the manufacturer, they weren’t shipped in a timely manner. They were experiencing a huge backlog, no doubt due to our nation’s 250th Anniversary. In the meantime, any flags that became unserviceable had to be taken down and retired.

The issue has been actively pursued by Bill Mattoon, Flag Committee Chair, and we finally received word today that those flags were shipped. As soon as they are received, they will be installed at Memorial Park.
