The Leadership Southeast Vermont program has recommenced after our COVID hiatus, with a record-breaking 19 participants from all over Southern Vermont. This cohort of leaders has had two sessions so far, an Orientation Session and Regional Culture and History Day.
In Orientation, students learned what to expect in the upcoming classes. They also reflected on their own personal leadership styles and places where they could improve. Students also met their teams, who they will be working with on their group projects throughout the course. We had wonderful presentations from Allison Hopkins from Mt Ascutney Regional Commission. Susan Westa from Windham Regional Commission, and Ross Gibson, a Leadership Educator from The Richards Group. Thank you to SEVCA in Westminster for allowing us to use their building.
In the second session, held in Windsor, VT, participants learned about Regional Culture and History. The day started with a series of presentations about the men that made an economic impact on Springfield and the Precision Valley, and the history of some of the local towns and their accomplishments. After the morning of presentations, the class got to enjoy the beautiful autumn day with a walking tour of Windsor, learning about the influential architecture and inventions that started there. The tour ended at the American Precision Museum where we were handed over to their knowledgeable staff for a tour through time and innovation. The students learned about how Windsor, and the surrounding towns, helped change the way we think about mass production. After regrouping at the Waypoint Center, we headed to our last stop, Saint-Gaudens National Historic Park, where we got a tour of his artwork and the historical context.
Our next session will be in November, at the River Valley Technical Center, where the participants will learn about the education system in Vermont.

DON’T MISS THE EARLY BIRD DEADLINE: LEADERSHIP SOUTHEAST VERMONT
Time flies! Summer is here and the Leadership Southeast Vermont program will soon be starting up Sessions for the 2022-23 course. LSEVT serves both Windham and Windsor counties, preparing individuals to meet the challenges of the future. We are hopeful to get strong participation this year, and while the applications are rolling in, there are still spots available to be filled.
The 2020 graduating class was comprised of participants from Brattleboro, Springfield, and surrounding towns. Two teams collaborated on group projects to serve our immediate communities, and the graduates are now better connected within the region and more informed about ways to have a positive impact in our neighborhoods.
The Leadership Southeast Vermont program is an immensely valuable learning and growth opportunity. The course fosters an increased understanding of the issues facing our neighborhoods and creates awareness of the resources available to meet those challenges. You will gain experiences in this course that you can get no other way! Class participants have a shared commitment to becoming active leaders in their communities and improving the future of Southeast Vermont. If you are interested to join us, now is the time to contact us for more information. If someone you know could benefit from the class, please make the connection, and send them our way!
Early applicants receive a tuition discount, so don't miss the Early Bird Deadline: July 31st. Thank you for helping us to inspire local individuals to become the trustees of our community. Please spread the word!

Thank you Vanessa (LSEVT Class of 2020) for all that you do! You’re an inspiration.
Congratulations to Vanessa Santana who recently started a new role with the Windham County COSU (Consortium on Substance Use) as a Family Treatment Court Coordinator! Vanessa has been very involved in the peer-recovery profession for the past four years and advocates passionately for families who have been impacted by the family court system. Her enthusiasm and strong work ethics will help COSU to bring Windham County a much-needed Family Treatment Docket.
Vanessa continues her role here at the recovery center as a recovery coach at the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital emergency department and with our Moms in Recovery program. She also works with the The Root Social Justice Center, where she sits on the collective and helps run a support group called Families United; this group is open to anyone affected by the state's Department of Children and Families. Where Vanessa sees harm and hurt, she finds people and ways to create change! Thanks, Vanessa, for all you do!
Great little story about Karen Fortier of Brattleboro Savings & Loan, a recent graduate of the 2020 LSEVT program. It was a pleasure having Karen in the course, and her perspective from the banking world lent an interesting perspective to our ongoing discussions about community development and the challenges we face in rural areas. Way to go Karen!
And thank you to BS&L, they are long-time supporters of the Leadership Southeast Vermont Program, as well as a certified B Corporation (a new kind of business that balances purpose with profit and encompasses a community of leaders driving a global movement of people using business as a force for good)!
