Today marks the 15th anniversary of the devastating tornadoes that struck Western Massachusetts on June 1, 2011.

An EF-3 tornado carved a 39-mile path of destruction, beginning in Westfield, particularly doing damage to West Springfield, Springfield and Monson before ending in Sturbridge. The storm claimed three lives, injured 27 people, it damaged approximately 1,600 homes, and completely destroyed more than 500.

Thousands of residents were left without power and faced the difficult task of rebuilding their lives and communities.

At that time, Revitalize CDC was known as Rebuilding Together Springfield. In the aftermath of the disaster, we were proud to play a leading role in helping families recover. We worked tirelessly to rebuild homes for low-income homeowners who lacked insurance, were underinsured, or fell victim to fraudulent out-of-state contractors who took deposits and never returned to complete the work.

Fifteen years later, we remember those who lost loved ones, honor the resilience of the survivors, and recognize the countless volunteers, partners, and community members who came together during one of the most challenging times in our region's history.

The recovery effort demonstrated the strength, compassion, and determination that define Western Massachusetts. We remain committed to ensuring that vulnerable homeowners have safe and healthy places to live, both in times of crisis and every day.

🏑 Weatherize Wednesday Tip

Don’t forget to replace your HVAC air filter! A dirty or clogged filter can make your heating and cooling system work much harder than necessary, increasing energy use and raising your monthly utility bills πŸ’Έβš‘. Clean filters improve airflow, help maintain consistent indoor temperatures, reduce dust and allergens, and can even extend the life of your HVAC system β„οΈβ˜€οΈ
Most homes should replace filters every 1–3 months depending on pets 🐢, allergies 🀧, and system usage. This quick and affordable DIY task can improve comfort, boost efficiency, and help your home stay healthier year-round πŸŒŽπŸ’š
βœ… Better airflow
βœ… Lower energy costs
βœ… Improved indoor air quality
βœ… Less strain on your HVAC system
βœ… More consistent temperatures throughout your home
Small maintenance steps today can lead to big savings over time πŸ’‘πŸ”§
