🇮🇹⛵ ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY — SEPTEMBER 6, 1492

On September 6, 1492, Christopher Columbus and his three ships — the Niña, Pinta, and Santa María — departed the Canary Islands, beginning the decisive westward crossing of the Atlantic.

After leaving Palos de la Frontera, Spain, on August 3, the expedition stopped in the Canary Islands for repairs and supplies. From there, Columbus and his crew sailed west into an ocean largely unknown to Europeans, ultimately reaching the Caribbean on October 12.

🌊 That September voyage would become one of the most consequential—and debated—voyages in world history, permanently connecting Europe and the Americas.

Today, September 6 marks the beginning of the Atlantic crossing that changed the course of history.

All are welcome to attend a Solemn High Mass (Latin Mass) Thursday, Sept. 17, for the Feast of the Stigmata of St. Francis. Since it is the Holy Year of St. Francis, marking the 800 years since his passing, St. Stanislaus Basilica has been designated a holy site. There will be a large choir of members from the various traditional communities around the region to accompany the Mass. There will be program booklets that will have the Latin and English translations so everyone can follow. A reception will be held following Mass.

Larry Pietrucci and his team will be spearheading the Taste of Italy at the auditorium of the former Mt. Carmel School in Springfield's South End, currently South End Middle School.

Please note that this is not a Sons & Daughters of Italy – St. Padre Pio #3013 event, but they have our full support! We hope our members will come out and support this wonderful event benefiting our church and Italian community.

The Columbus Day Parade returns on Sunday, October 11!
