The recent mattress factory fire in Belleville, NJ is a strong reminder of how quickly modern mattresses can burn — not just in factories, but inside our homes. Foam and synthetic materials produce fast‑moving fire and heavy, toxic smoke that can overwhelm a bedroom in minutes.

IAFF Local 648 encourages residents to take simple steps to stay safe:
• Keep mattresses away from heaters, candles, and smoking materials
• Replace damaged or exposed‑foam mattresses
• Don’t store old mattresses in hallways, basements, or near ignition sources
• Make sure smoke alarms work on every level of your home

The same materials that fueled that large‑scale fire can create dangerous conditions in a single room. A few precautions at home go a long way toward protecting your family.

Today, on International Firefighters’ Day, IAFF Local 648 proudly honors the dedication, courage, and sacrifice of the men and women who answer the call—day and night, without hesitation. From structure fires and medical emergencies to technical rescues and community outreach, our members stand ready to protect Springfield with professionalism and heart.

This day is also a moment to recognize the global fire service family. Firefighters around the world share a common bond: a commitment to service, a willingness to face danger, and a promise to put others first. We are proud to stand among them.

To our brothers and sisters on the line, to our retirees who paved the way, and to the families who support us—thank you. Your strength and resilience make our work possible.

As we honor those who serve today, we also remember the firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice. Their legacy guides us, inspires us, and reminds us why this job matters.

Stay safe, stay united, and take care of one another.

This past weekend, members of IAFF Local 648 proudly participated in the annual Fight For Air Climb in Hartford, joining firefighters and first responders from across the region to support the American Lung Association. The event challenges participants to climb 34 flights of stairs at Hartford 21, raising funds and awareness for the 34 million Americans living with lung disease.
Our members stepped up—literally and figuratively—demonstrating the strength, dedication, and solidarity that define the fire service. Great work guys!
