A first-generation college graduate from the Central Valley, Eduardo Savala Alvarez commuted from Modesto throughout college and earned a bachelor's degree in civil and environmental engineering.

Before graduating, he received three job offers, with an average starting salary of $92,000 and an average signing bonus of $4,300. He ultimately accepted a position with Clark Construction, where he now serves as a project engineer.

His journey reflects the transformative power of higher education and the lasting impact it can have for generations to come.

"Eduardo's story is one of many examples showing how investment in education can empower students from the Central Valley to become engineers, leaders and contributors to the communities they proudly call home," Professor Siddaiah Yarra said.

A partnership built for innovation and real-world impact⚑

UC Merced and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory have signed a Strategic Partnership Agreement to advance research, support national and energy security, strengthen California's innovation ecosystem, and help prepare the next generation of scientists and engineers. The collaboration includes a dedicated Lawrence Livermore presence on the UC Merced campus creating more opportunities for students, faculty and lab scientists to solve challenges together.
