Last night, Park Board approved moving forward on applying for grants to make Southward Park into an All Inclusive park which will include equipment for all children, an updated court, bathrooms with a pavilion, and parking. This park will be completely fenced in so parents with small children or children who like to run can safely do so within the fenced in area.
We are working with grant companies who specifically award grants to projects such as this one. We have a company working on drawing that we can share with the public soon. Our plan is to start this project this calendar year.

The Decatur City Pool will be closed until Friday as we look into leakage issues. In May, the pool was losing a foot of water every 24 hours. We did some investigating and found that the baby pool drain was constantly leaking as well as leaks from the intakes to the pool. We chose to close the baby pool until we could have it fixed. The only fix would be to concrete the current holes and run it's own chlorinated system to a shed closer to the baby pool. The cost of this is approximately $50,000. Tonight, the Park Board decided to not repair the baby pool at this time as there are other issues with the big pool we need to focus on at this time.
2 weeks ago, the big pool started losing 7 inches of water every 24 hours. We know where the water is going but have not been able to determine where it's leaking from the big pool. Filling our pool every night for 7 inches is very costly. We do have a few ideas on where the leak or leaks could be happening and will be doing our best to solve these issues. With the weather this week, we have decided it is best to close the pool as we work on finding a solution for our leakage issue. We hope to know more before the weekend.
Please stay tuned for updates on the pool. We would also appreciate comments to stay positive and helpful as we know the frustration the community will have with this news. We feel the same way as we have a fully trained staff ready to work who cannot work at this time. This is frustrating for all of us but we are actively pursuing a solution.
We will be having an emergency Park Board meeting next week to discuss this more. The date and time is TBD as we work to get the entire board together.
