Philip Neri is remembered as the joyful saint, the "Apostle of Rome," a man so full of good humor that he is often called the saint of laughter. But beneath the joy was something the doctors did not discover until after he died.

In 1544, while he was still a layman, Philip had the habit of going out at night through the sleeping streets of Rome to the catacombs of San Sebastiano, where the early Christians had gathered and the martyrs were buried, to pray. On the eve of Pentecost that year, as he was praying for the gifts of the Holy Spirit, he saw what he described as a globe of fire. It entered his mouth and sank into his heart.

He was seized with such a burning love of God that he threw himself on the ground and bared his chest, crying out that he could bear no more. When he rose, he found a swelling over his heart, the size of a fist. It never went away. For the rest of his life, whenever he prayed or spoke of God, his heart would pound so violently that those near him could feel it, and at times he had to bare his chest to cool the heat he felt.

He lived another fifty-one years, founded the Oratory, and died in 1595. When his body was examined after death, the doctors found the cause of the lifelong swelling. His heart was greatly enlarged, and two of his ribs had been broken and curved outward into an arch, as if to make room for it.

Before he was a bishop, Martin of Tours was a Roman soldier. The most famous moment of his early life came at the gate of Amiens, on a bitter winter day, when he cut his own military cloak in two with his sword and gave half to a beggar shivering in the cold. That night, the account says, he saw Christ in a dream, wearing the half-cloak he had given away.

He left the army, became a monk, and founded a monastery at Ligugé in Gaul. It was there that one of the most striking events of his life took place.

A man had come to join the community as a catechumen, someone preparing for baptism but not yet baptized. While Martin was away for three days, the man fell sick with a fever and died, unbaptized. When Martin returned and found the body laid out in a cell, he sent everyone away, stretched himself over the dead man, and prayed. After a time, the man stirred, opened his eyes, and lived. He was baptized, and he lived for years afterward, telling everyone what had happened.

We are not depending on a distant legend for this. It was written down by Sulpicius Severus, a man who knew Martin personally, spoke with him, and set down his life while Martin was still living. Martin went on to become Bishop of Tours, and by the accounts of those around him, the dead were raised through his prayers three times.

On the night of August 14, 1730, while the people of Siena were keeping the eve of the Assumption, thieves broke into the Basilica of San Francesco and stole a golden ciborium holding 351 consecrated hosts. The city was thrown into grief. The Palio itself was suspended in mourning.

Three days later, on August 17, a priest at the nearby church of Santa Maria in Provenzano noticed something shining in the alms box. Inside, covered in dust and cobwebs, were the hosts. All of them. Counted and matched exactly: 348 whole and 6 halves.

They were carried back in solemn procession. And then something unexpected happened, which is why we still speak of them today. They were not consumed. They were kept. Everyone expected them to decay, as bread does. They did not.

Nearly three hundred years later, they have not decayed. Over the centuries the Church examined them again and again. In 1914, Pope St. Pius X ordered a rigorous scientific study, and the examiners kept unconsecrated hosts alongside as a control. The control hosts rotted in the normal way. The consecrated hosts of 1730 remained fresh, their starch intact, chemically pure, with no preservative and no sign of corruption. The commission concluded that no natural explanation could account for it.

In 1980, Pope St. John Paul II knelt before them in Siena and said simply, "It is the Real Presence."

Rob Wilcox shared his miracle story with me via email in September 2026. After saying a short prayer to God, he had a supernatural experience, feeling himself in the palm of God’s own hand. Read his full story below.

In His Hands

In April of 2022, I was diagnosed with throat cancer. I went to OHSU and met Doctor Schindler. He said I would need surgery to remove it, but he also recommended I see a radiation oncologist, so I met Dr. Kang in Salem. It seemed radiation was the way to go rather than invasive surgery. I did the radiation, 5 days a week for 31 treatments. A follow-up biopsy indicated the radiation did not kill the cancer, nor did it stop its growth.

I went back to see Dr. Schindler and he set a surgery date as soon as possible. It was set for Dec. 6th and took seven hours. They removed my larynx and opened a breathing port in my throat. I can no longer breathe through my mouth or nose.

I woke up in a hospital bed on the 7th. The OHSU nursing staff was incredible. They took care of my every need. All were friendly and willing to serve not just my needs but my comfort as well.

On, I think, the 5th day, I got a nurse named Julie. She was phenomenal. She also was a practicing Christian and loved the Lord. On her last shift and her last few minutes, she gave me a big hug and some encouraging words.

As she walked out the door, I said to God, thank you God for putting me in Julie’s hands. As soon as I said that, I felt lifted from the bed and found myself cradled in these enormous hands. I could see them. They were definitely Jesus’ hands. I immediately fell asleep and had my best night’s sleep. I think God was telling me yes, I put you in Julie’s hands, as she is in My hands, but remember My son, you’re most assuredly in My hands as well.

In the mountains of the French Alps, in the year 1664, a poor and unschooled shepherdess named Benoîte Rencurel began to see the Virgin Mary. She was seventeen. The apparitions did not last a season. They continued, on and on, for fifty-four years, until Benoîte's death in 1718.

Mary called herself the Refuge of Sinners. Her message was quiet and constant: turn back to God, be reconciled, go to confession, live in peace with God and neighbor. She asked that a shrine be built, and she made a promise. Those who were anointed with the oil from the lamp that burned before her altar, and who prayed with faith, would be healed.

They were. For three centuries, healings have been reported at Laus through that oil, and the shrine has never stopped drawing pilgrims.

What sets Laus apart is how carefully it was recorded from the start. Four educated men of the time, among them a lawyer who became a royal judge and two doctors of theology, documented Benoîte's life and testimony in detail, making these among the best-documented apparitions in the Church's history.

For all that, Laus remained little known outside France for centuries. Then, on May 4, 2008, the bishop of Gap and Embrun formally recognized the supernatural origin of the apparitions, the first apparition site the Church in France had approved since Lourdes in 1862.
