The Equal Rights Amendment is needed NOW more than ever, especially during this War on Women, with blatant attacks on our rights. Even though the ERA has met all constitutional requirements for an amendment, it still has not been certified and published in the Constitution.

ERA NOW has a strategy to get it over the finish line, and YOU should be a part of it! Assuming the mid-term elections result in a
Pro-ERA Congress, the ERA Joint Resolution will be re-introduced in both chambers in the first 100 days of the new session, which convenes in January 2027.

ERA NOW is collecting One Million Signatures on the Sign4ERA petition to take to Congress to show our support for finishing the task to publish the ERA. It’s on us to help collect signatures.

August 26th is Women’s Equality Day, so this month’s Recommended Reading is The Woman’s Hour: The Great Fight to Win the Vote. Elaine Weiss follows three women in the final weeks prior to the signing of the 19th amendment. It is a nonfiction book that reads like a mystery novel, with people on both sides doing
whatever they could for their side to win. These suffragists hoped to push men into voting in favor of Votes for Women, and they survived arrests, hunger strikes, forced feedings and beatings...all so they could vote. This is a book about “ordinary women banding together to become activists...to challenge an oppressive system.” The Woman’s Hour is a great read and call to action to carry on the legacies of these women, and to keep challenging our current oppressive system. Another important book written by Elaine Weiss, Spell Freedom, honoring women who fought Jim Crow Laws so people of color could exercise their right to vote.

Equity Matters: What’s at Stake on the November Ballot

Come learn about the proposed constitutional amendment that would eliminate “preferential treatment” and how it could limit opportunities for marginalized communities. In addition to the important governor and other state legislative and congressional races in November, as Corrie notes in her column this month, Wisconsin voters will also decide on three constitutional amendments that the Republican legislature quietly advanced through the required two consecutive legislative sessions.
At our August 27 monthly organizing meeting,
we will focus on one: the “anti-equity” amendment Special guest speaker, Joan Schwarz, of the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin, will explain the amendment and its potential impact, helping us prepare to contact people across Wisconsin to share this important information.
