Are we still far from achieving sustainable urbanism? 🏙️
At the recently concluded 12th World Sustainability Forum in Hong Kong, Dr. Michael W. Mehaffy, Guest Editor of the Special Issue “Advances in Urban Planning, Regeneration and Sustainable Cities,” gave a keynote speech on the current state and future of sustainable urban development.
His message began with a challenging reality: while progress has been made in many areas, notably renewable energy, the world is still falling short of many of the Sustainable Development Goals and the objectives of the New Urban Agenda, adopted by all 193 UN Member States in 2015 and 2016.
Yet, there is also reason for optimism. As Dr. Mehaffy highlighted, we now have a clearer understanding of what needs to be done, informed by new scientific insights into the complex adaptive systems that underpin our cities and the broader challenges of sustainable development.
Drawing on these perspectives, the Special Issue “Advances in Urban Planning, Regeneration and Sustainable Cities” welcomes research exploring innovative approaches to urban planning, regeneration, and the transition towards more sustainable cities.
We invite researchers and practitioners to contribute their latest findings and perspectives to this Special Issue.
