How the IOAP Helps Librarians 12/05/2026

Librarians play a critical role in advancing open access publishing — yet they often face heavy administrative burdens with limited resources.

MDPI's Institutional Open Access Program (IOAP) is designed to support them, offering streamlined workflows, flexible billing arrangements, and a dedicated institutional dashboard for tracking manuscripts and publications.

With open access now accounting for over half of published research articles worldwide, programs like the IOAP are an important step in reducing barriers for both institutions and researchers.

‘Decision fatigue’ could be hurting your health. A nutritionist explains 11/05/2026

Making healthy food choices is an essential aspect of keeping well. However, decision-fatigue may make it difficult to make the right choice, especially when the vast variety of options can feel overwhelming.

A review published in the Open Access journal Nutrients and mentioned in The Conversation explores how decision fatigue may impact food choices. Decision-fatigue remains a well-established psychological phenomenon with real mental and physical impacts such as exhaustion, reduced willpower, increases risk aversion and depleted mental energy.

Current studies suggest that lowered self-control can result in impulsive behaviours, such as making poor food choices. However, after carrying out extensive analysis of the current literature, the researchers found that the link between decision fatigue and food choices is significantly understudied.

The authors suggest that convenience cooking products could be a potential solution to facilitate decision making, however further research would be required to further investigate this.

Heat-resistant corals could help reefs adapt to climate change 08/05/2026

Probiotics may not only be beneficial for humans, explores a recent study.

Coral reefs are rapidly declining due to climate warming. One aspect of climate research focuses on restoring resilience to these biodiverse-rich ecosystems and vital coastal habitats.

A new study published in Microorganisms and mentioned in The Conversation reviews how administering probiotic bacteria to coral reefs could assist in thermal enhancement, making it more resilient to drastic temperature changes.

However, only a small number of studies testing its thermal stability have been done so far. More research is needed to assess the overall efficacy and sustainability of this potentially revolutionary practice, helping to restore vital coral reef ecosystems.

Heat-resistant corals could help reefs adapt to climate change The Earth has already experienced three mass coral bleaching events over the last few decades, with a fourth happening now. Researchers are trying to find ways to make corals more adaptable to heat.
