A History of Doors in Sri Lankan Architecture 🚪
Have you ever stopped to think about the doors you pass through every day?
Dr. Nishan Rasanga Wijetunge's new Open Access book, "Ge Dora―Timeless Thresholds: Glimpses of Sri Lanka's Domestic Doors Through History", takes us on a journey through Sri Lankan architecture, from colonial influences to political independence, told through the doors that witnessed it all.
Over two decades, Wijetunge photographed 66 doors across Sri Lanka's towns and villages, capturing three pivotal centuries of history. Each door, he says, is a silent sentinel to the island's rich architectural legacy.

How do you find the right academic book when thousands are being published open access every year?
That's the challenge DOAB was built to solve. The Directory of Open Access Books is a free, community-led discovery service that indexes peer-reviewed books, helping researchers, librarians, and students find trusted content without wading through endless publisher libraries.
At MDPI Books, we're a bronze sponsor of DOAB and proud to have our titles indexed there. Our latest blog explains how DOAB works, why scholarly trust matters more than ever, and what a 30% rise in open access book requests in 2026 tells us about where the field is heading.

We’re looking back at a milestone in the MDPI Books library: "Forty Years of Heel Prick Screening in the Netherlands." Published in 2016, this book was our very first title and remains a definitive record of a public health program that has changed lives for generations.
From its roots in the 1960s to its full implementation, the history of neonatal screening is a testament to what happens when science meets public policy.
As we continue to grow our collection, we are proud to host foundational works that provide a roadmap for future medical breakthroughs.

What makes us human? That's the question at the heart of both the humanities and social sciences and it's why these disciplines matter more than ever.
From literature and philosophy to economics and psychology, these fields shape how we understand history, navigate complex societies, and build a more ethical world.
At MDPI Books, we're proud to support researchers working at this intersection. Our Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities competition offered one researcher full editorial support and a complete waiver of book processing charges, making research freely available to all through open access.
