Anti-OHV Details Lead to Seizure of Two Dirt Bikes and Four Mopeds

Springfield, Mass. — On Friday September 19th and Saturday September 20th, members of the Springfield Police Department working an Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) enforcement detail seized two dirt bikes and four mopeds.

Springfield Police Officers conduct these details to deter the illegal riding of dirt bikes and other off-highway vehicles. These vehicles are illegal on any city street and have led to serious injuries and death to numerous riders. Some riders are also known to drive recklessly, putting pedestrians and other vehicular traffic in danger.

On Friday, officers responded to the area of Smead Arena on Roosevelt Avenue for a report of moped riders operating recklessly. As officers arrived, some of the riders fled, but two mopeds were abandoned and seized.

Also on Friday, officers observed a moped rider operating recklessly on Carew Street. Officers conducted a traffic stop on St. James Avenue, which led to a criminal summons for the adult male rider who was unlicensed. The motorcycle was towed.

Later Friday, officers observed two dirt bike riders on State Street near Sherman Street. Officers conducted a traffic stop and issued civil citation to the two male juvenile riders. The dirt bikes were towed.

On Saturday, officers observed a moped rider operating in a reckless manner. Officers conducted a traffic stop on Arbutus Street. The adult male rider will be issued a criminal complaint. The motorcycle was seized and towed.

The Springfield Police Department has now seized 137 illegal off-highway-vehicles and illegal motorcycles mainly due in part to these continued Anti-OHV details.

SPD FIU Investigation Leads to Recovery of Trafficking Weight of Co***ne

Springfield, Mass. --- On Thursday September 17th at approximately 2:00 p.m., members of the Springfield Police Fi****ms Investigation Unit (FIU) under the direction of Lieutenant Jaime Bruno seized more than 66 grams of co***ne and arrested three suspects.

For the past several months, FIU Detectives have been investigating the illegal distribution of co***ne from an apartment on the 0-100 block of Amity Court. Mr. Joshua Colon, Mr. Frederick Lyons and Ms. Desray King were identified as suspects.

Detectives applied for and were granted a warrant for the apartment.

Shortly before 2:00 p.m., Thursday, FIU Detectives executed the search warrant at the Amity Court apartment. FIU Detectives detained Colon, Lyons and King. Six other individuals were detained inside the apartment and later released.

During the search, FIU Detectives recovered approximately 66.7 grams of co***ne, liquid Gabapentin and 21 Gabapentin pills, 27 oxycodone pills and $4129 in cash. FIU Detectives placed Colon, Lyons and King under arrest.

FIU Detectives Recover Illegal Firearm, Trafficking Weight of Co***ne

Springfield, Mass. --- At approximately 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday September 15th, members of the Springfield Police Fi****ms Investigation Unit (FIU) under the direction of Lieutenant Jaime Bruno arrested 40-year-old Israel Aponte and recovered an illegal firearm, a trafficking weight of co***ne and he**in.

Over the past several months, FIU Detectives have been investigating the distribution of crack-co***ne from an apartment on the 0-100 block of Daniel Street in Indian Orchard.

FIU Detectives applied for and were granted a search warrant for the apartment and a vehicle.

Around 12:15 p.m., Tuesday, Detectives executed the search warrants.

Five adults, including Aponte, were detained, and one child was in the home.

During the search, Detectives recovered approximately 27.7 grams of co***ne, 20 bags of he**in, crushed fentanyl pills, $3270 in cash and an illegal loaded firearm. The firearm was reported stolen out of Vermont.

FIU Detectives placed Aponte under arrest, two adults who were detained will be issued criminal complaints.

The Springfield Police Youth Aid Bureau is seeking your help to locate 17-year-old runaway Aryanna Pellerin.

She is approximately 5’6”, 180lbs with a tattoo of a flower on her forearm. She may be in need of her medications. She left her home on Wilbraham Road, Saturday September 19th around 9:00 p.m.

She has been known to frequent Greenleaf Park, Forest Park, the South End and the Sheridan Street area of Chicopee.

SPD Remembers Officer Raymond Moriarty

Springfield, Mass. --- Today we remember Springfield Police Officer Raymond Moriarty.

Officer Moriarty was killed after being hit by a vehicle while on-duty. He had been a Springfield Police Officer for four years when he died on September 20th, 1946. Officer Moriarty was 30 years old.

SPD Homicide Unit Investigation Leads to Arrest in August Murder

Springfield, Mass. --- On Friday September 18th at approximately 11:15 a.m., members of the Springfield Police Fi****ms Investigation Unit (FIU), Springfield Police Emergency Services Unit (ESU) and United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force arrested 22-year-old Alex Alejandro on the 0-100 block of Salem Street in connection with a homicide on August 16th.

On August 16th at approximately 4:15 a.m., officers responded to 3100 block of Main Street for a ShotSpotter activation. A short time later, an adult female gunshot victim arrived at Baystate where she succumbed to her injuries. The Hampden District Attorney’s Office later identified the victim as 19-year-old Reinalyz Caraballo.

The Springfield Police Department’s Homicide Unit under the direction of Captain Trent Duda began investigating in conjunction with the Hampden District Attorney’s Murder Unit.

Detectives identified Alejandro as the shooting suspect and were issued a warrant for his arrest.

During the course of the investigation, Detectives also identified Alejandro as a suspect in a shooting on Carew Street on August 9th. At approximately 12:30 a.m., August 9th, officers responded to the 800 block of Carew Street for a report of shots fired. Officers located an adult male gunshot victim who was transported to Baystate. This victim remains hospitalized with serious injuries.

Alejandro will be arraigned in Springfield District Court.

22-year-old Alex Alejandro of Springfield is charged with:

- Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License
- Receiving a Stolen Motor Vehicle

Detectives also were granted an arrest warrant in connection with the August 9th shooting, where Alejandro will be charged with.

Springfield Police Officers were on hand to provide helpful information at the Emergency and Safety Preparedness Expo held Wednesday at the Raymond A. Jordan Senior Center.

The event, presented by the Springfield Fire Department and the Springfield Department of Elder Affairs brought together numerous agencies to provide resources and tips on first aid basics, evacuations, protecting loved ones and more.
