On September 21, 2026, at approximately 4:15 a.m., the Springfield Police Department was notified of a shooting that occurred in the area of E. 2nd Street and Claire Avenue.

During the investigation, officers learned that a male and female were traveling in a vehicle in the area when an unknown subject shot at their vehicle. The female was struck by gunfire and suffered a non-life-threatening injury. She was transported to a local hospital by the driver of the vehicle for treatment.

Officers were able to locate the crime scene and are actively working to identify the person responsible.

Last week, the SPD family said goodbye to K-9 Aero.

Aero was 12 years old and served our department and community for five years. He was much more than a police K-9, he was a loyal partner, a member of our department, and a beloved part of Sergeant Ortiz’s family.

We want to thank Sergeant Ortiz and his family for making Aero part of their home and giving him so much love throughout his life. We know his loss leaves a tremendous hole in their family.

Aero served Springfield well, and we are grateful for every year we had with him. He will be deeply missed and never forgotten.

Rest easy, Aero. You were a good boy.

Following an investigation that began as a report of a missing juvenile, the Springfield Police Department arrested 46-year-old Juhvanna Marie Bailey Reid on two counts of Aggravated Battery, three counts of Child Abuse, and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor.

On August 29, 2026, officers with the Springfield Police Department responded to a residence in the 800 block of Nottingham Drive regarding a missing 9-year-old child. With the assistance of a K-9 team from the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, officers located the child hiding in the backyard of the residence.

After being located, the child asked officers not to return them to the residence and requested to speak with officers inside a patrol vehicle. During that interaction, officers observed multiple injuries to the child’s arms, neck, back, and chest.

An emergency Child Protective Team interview was subsequently conducted at the Gulf Coast Children’s Advocacy Center. The investigation revealed allegations of physical abuse that went far beyond reasonable corporal punishment and resulted in scarring to the child’s body. Investigators also learned the child had allegedly been subjected to severe verbal abuse.

A second child residing in the home was also interviewed, and investigators learned that child had allegedly been subjected to similar treatment.

Through the investigation, Reid, who is the children’s aunt and caregiver, was identified as the person responsible for the alleged physical and verbal abuse. Investigators obtained and executed a search warrant at the residence, and Reid was subsequently arrested and transported to the Bay County Jail to await first appearance.

“Children deserve to feel safe in their own homes, and allegations of this nature are deeply concerning,” Chief Barry Roberts said. “Our officers remained focused on the child’s safety, and their quickness to listen and take the child’s concerns seriously was critical.”
