ELMHURST RIDGE SCHOOL DISTRICT — A three-person instructional research team from the district office showed that a preliminary quiz indicated that 29 of 31 students in Mr. Pompol's world history class could explain the causes of the French Revolution, despite the classroom whiteboard remaining "entirely blank" for all three days. Lead researcher Mr. Delgado said the team had "ruled out cheating" and was now "seriously exploring" whether the students had somehow read the objective elsewhere.

Mr. Pompol said he told students what they would be learning at the start of each class, "out loud, using words," and then..just taught it. Sophomore Anneliese confirmed she knew the objective because "he said it," and added that she "also wrote it in her notebook," which Mr. Delgado photographed.

The team has recommended that Mr. Pompol write the objective on the board "to confirm the learning occurred."

Only laughed because it almost seems true.

COLDBROOK COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT — The district's behavior dashboard reported zero incidents of thrown furniture across the first three weeks of school, down from 41 in the same span last year, after the incident-reporting menu was updated Aug. 17 to replace "Thrown Object (Furniture)" with "Student-Initiated Flexible Seating." The new category, which requires no referral, no parent contact and no follow-up, has been selected 41 times.

Sixth grade teacher Mr. Nell said a chair passed his head Tuesday and that he logged it as instructed, selecting "high" when the form asked him to rate the seating choice's impact on engagement. Director of Data and Accountability Ms. Hubbard said the change reflects "a strengths-based lens" and noted that under the old category the same event would have generated paperwork.

Three of the chairs were relocated through a window and are now listed as outdoor seating.

For years, teaching was seen as a respected profession, and teachers were valued for the work they did.

Now many teachers are overwhelmed, under-supported, blamed for problems they did not create, and expected to absorb more with fewer resources and less authority.

And despite all of that, they still show up.

They still encourage students.
They still stay late.
They still spend their own money on classrooms.
They still try to help children succeed, even when the system around them makes the job harder every year.

Meanwhile, more teachers are burning out.
More are leaving.
And fewer young people are choosing the profession at all.

That should concern everyone.

Because when experienced teachers walk away, students lose too.

Society depends on people willing to educate the next generation.

And if conditions continue to decline, eventually there will not be enough people willing to do the job anymore.

If society truly values education, it has to start valuing the people who make it possible.

Teachers do not need to be treated like heroes. They need to be supported like professionals.
