Red Poppies-In Memory of Veterans
In 1915, inspired by the poem “In Flanders Fields” Moina Belle Michael wrote her own poem:
We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.
On Memorial Day she started wearing a poppy and began to sell them with proceeds going to service people in need. The poppy is now the international symbol of remembrance and support for all military veterans thanks to the Poppy Lady, Moina Bell Michael.
