We welcomed Springfield Mayor and staunch supporter of this local Misty Buscher and Liuna Local 477 member Mary Shanklin for Ward 2 Alderwoman to speak to a packed house at our monthly meeting. They both spoke on the need for good paying UNION JOBS being the way forward in our community here in Springfield.

Labor Day: More Than the End of Summer
Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September to honor the American workers whose labor, determination and sacrifices helped build our nation.
The first Labor Day celebration took place in New York City on September 5, 1882. Approximately 10,000 workers marched in a parade organized by the Central Labor Union, calling attention to the dignity of labor and the importance of fair working conditions. In 1894, Labor Day officially became a federal holiday.
Today, many people associate the holiday with a long weekend, family gatherings, barbecues and the unofficial end of summer. But its history reminds us that the rights and protections workers have today were achieved through years of courage, unity and perseverance.
This Labor Day, let us remember and appreciate every person whose work—whether visible or unnoticed—keeps our communities and our country moving forward.
