Offering reading and math instruction (K-12) virtually and in-person in Spring Hill, KS. Homeschool support (Ages 4-13)

06/16/2026

Learning doesn’t have to happen at a desk!

One of the best ways children learn is through play and hands-on experiences. When kids are actively engaged, they’re not only having fun, they’re building deeper understanding and making meaningful connections to what they’re learning.

In today’s activity, we explored the science of forces through a water balloon toss game! As we tossed the balloons back and forth, we experienced concepts like force, motion, and impact in a way that was memorable and exciting. Learning becomes much more powerful when children can see, touch, move, and experiment with new ideas.

At Skill Builders Studio by On Target Learning, we combine explicit instruction with hands-on activities, games, and collaborative learning experiences that help children develop strong academic skills while staying engaged and motivated.

Our drop-off homeschool program is designed for students who thrive with interactive learning and individualized support.

Early math isn’t about speed and memorizing facts, it’s about understanding.

Before children can add and subtract confidently, they need to understand:

Number sense
Patterns
One-to-one correspondence; and
How numbers relate to each other

When those foundations are strong, everything else becomes easier. At Skill Builders Studio, learners will build numeracy skills by engaging in hands-on, interactive, play-based lessons.

Now enrolling 5-7 year olds for our Fall 2026 cohort!

"Kids deserve a break during the summer."

Absolutely!

But here's what many parents don't realize: a break from school doesn't have to mean a break from learning.

What actually helps students thrive is a balance of rest, play, and short, targeted practice that keeps important skills fresh.

In this photo, a student is using orthographic mapping to learn high-frequency words with tricky spellings. Instead of simply memorizing words, we're connecting sounds to letters and helping those words become permanently stored in memory for both reading and spelling.

These activities take just a few minutes, but they can make a big difference in preventing summer learning loss and building confidence for the next school year.

That's why our summer tutoring sessions focus on meaningful practice, engaging activities, and helping students experience success while still enjoying their summer break.

A few summer tutoring spots are still available. Send me a message if you'd like more information!

This simple math activity is helping build one of the most important math skills: number sense!

Using ten frames and manipulatives helps students see numbers, quantities, and relationships in a concrete way. Instead of just memorizing facts, they begin to understand how numbers work together, which lays the foundation for addition, subtraction, mental math, and problem-solving.

Hands-on activities like this help make math less overwhelming and more meaningful for students who need a little extra support and confidence.

Learning is always better when students can see it, touch it, and build it!

Reach out today to work with our tutor, Jaime, to build your student’s math skills this summer.

One of the most common concerns I hear from parents is:

“My child knows their letters, but reading just isn’t clicking yet.”

The gap between knowing sounds and reading words can feel confusing and frustrating, for both the child and the parent.

This stage is normal! It often means a child needs:

•More structured phonics instruction
•Direct instruction and consistent practice with blending
•Confidence-building repetition

Not more pressure. Our small reading groups are designed to provide direct instruction, repeated practice, and game-based learning in a cozy, low-pressure environment. Join a small group today and watch your child soar this summer!

Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) have delivered striking evidence that writing by hand engages the brain far more deeply than typing the same words on a keyboard.
In the study, published in Frontiers in Psychology, 36 university students wore high-density EEG caps with 256 electrodes while performing a simple task: copying words they saw on a screen. They did it once by hand with a digital pen and once by typing on a keyboard.
The results were dramatic. When participants wrote by hand, widespread brain connectivity patterns lit up — particularly in theta and alpha frequency bands linked to memory formation, sensory processing, attention, and learning. These connections spanned central and parietal regions. When they typed, those same areas went almost completely silent.
Lead researchers Audrey van der Meer and Ruud van der Weel emphasize that the fine motor movements, sensory feedback from the pen, and visual-motor coordination of handwriting create rich, elaborate neural networks that typing simply doesn’t replicate.
The findings have clear implications for education. As schools shift toward tablets and laptops, this research suggests preserving time for handwriting could give children a significant advantage in learning and memory. In an increasingly digital world, the humble pen may still be one of the best tools for building a stronger brain.

✨Introduction Time + Fall 2026 Program Announcement!✨

For years, I’ve worked with children who were bright, capable, and full of potential. But many of them have struggled in traditional learning environments. These students needed specialized support in reading or math, more time, explicit instruction, or simply a calmer and more individualized approach to learning.

Again and again in recent years, I have met homeschool families who felt stuck between two difficult choices: continue struggling on their own, or enroll their child in public school just to access intervention services and academic support.

To be clear, I love public school. And I love homeschool too! My dream is to provide the option that works best for your family in this season. ❤️

As a special education teacher and private tutor with 15 years of experience working with children, I created Skill Builders Studio by On Target Learning to give homeschool families another path, one where struggling learners can receive specialized, evidence-based instruction while remaining in the homeschool environment their families love.

At Skill Builders Studio, students are taught in small groups in a low-stress, encouraging environment where they can learn at their own pace, build confidence, and strengthen foundational reading and math skills through explicit instruction, strategic lessons, play-based practice, and individualized support.

Our program is designed especially with struggling learners in mind, including students with dyslexia, ADHD, learning disabilities, and other neuro-diverse learning needs.

I hold a Master’s degree in Special Education, maintain a current K–6 teaching license, and am currently working toward my dyslexia therapist certification. But beyond credentials, my greatest goal is for families to feel supported, understood, and encouraged throughout their homeschool journey.

Skill Builders Studio includes:
• Elementary Learners (ages 5–11)
• Explicit reading and math instruction
• Small group, play-based learning
• Optional additional tutoring and intervention support in a 1:1 setting
• Opportunities for social learning and play

More than anything, I want children to leave feeling capable and confident and for parents to feel peace of mind knowing their child is receiving the specialized support they need in a nurturing environment.

I’m so excited to open Skill Builders Studio this fall and partner with homeschool families in a meaningful way.

What most parents don’t realize about summer learning loss is that it doesn’t just affect grades, it affects confidence too.

When students struggle to remember reading skills, spelling patterns, or math facts after a long break, school can start to feel frustrating before the year even begins.

The good news? It doesn’t take hours of worksheets or one of those giant overwhelming workbooks to keep skills strong over the summer. Consistent, targeted practice can make a huge difference.

That’s exactly why we offer small group and 1:1 summer tutoring, taught by licensed teachers, focused on helping students maintain and build reading and math skills in a supportive fun environment.

Reach out today to get matched with one of our talented tutors!
