Today, Modesto Police Department Captain Chris Adams graduated from FBI National Academy Session 299 in Quantico, Virginia! 🇺🇸

The FBI National Academy is one of the most respected law enforcement leadership programs in the world. During the intensive 10-week program, Captain Adams joined 265 law enforcement professionals from across the United States and around the globe 🌎 for advanced training in leadership, communication, academics, and physical fitness.

Selection to the National Academy is reserved for experienced law enforcement professionals with demonstrated leadership within their agencies and communities. Session 299 included representatives from 44 states and the District of Columbia, along with 29 international law enforcement leaders representing 28 countries.

We are incredibly proud of Captain Adams for representing the Modesto Police Department and our community on this national and international stage. We look forward to having him back home and putting the knowledge, relationships, and experiences gained at Quantico to work here in Modesto.

TRAFFIC COLLISION UPDATE - SHELDON DRIVE & JANET CIRCLE

The Modesto Police Department is continuing to investigate this morning’s vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision near Eisenhut Elementary School.

The collision involved an adult female and three juveniles who were walking to school. The adult female is a relative of the three juveniles. Two juveniles were transported by air ambulance to a specialty hospital, while another juvenile and the adult female were transported to a local hospital. An additional pedestrian was evaluated at the scene and was not transported. All of those involved are currently reported to be in stable condition.

Immediately following the collision, the adult became trapped beneath the vehicle. A nearby resident quickly responded with a floor jack and was able to lift the vehicle enough to free her. His immediate actions were significant and may have saved her life.

MPD Traffic Unit investigators have obtained surveillance video from the area and are reviewing it as part of the investigation. Preliminary review of the video indicates the vehicle was not traveling at an excessive speed at the time of impact. The driver remained at the scene and has been cooperative with investigators.

At this time, no determination of fault has been made. Investigators are continuing to review video and other evidence to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision.

We understand the concern an incident like this creates, particularly when it occurs near a school and involves children. MPD will maintain an increased presence around the Eisenhut Elementary School area in the coming weeks to help promote traffic and pedestrian safety.

We appreciate the community members and first responders who assisted at the scene, and we wish everyone involved a full recovery.

Modesto, Calif. – On September 18, the Modesto Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence (DUI) Checkpoint from 8pm to 3am at an undisclosed location.

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Traffic Safety Unit Officer Cody Chesney said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

The Modesto Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While medicinal and recreational ma*****na are legal, driving under the influence of ma*****na is illegal.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

🚶‍♂️ September is Pedestrian Safety Month 🚶‍♀️

The Modesto Police Department is reminding drivers to slow down, stay alert and watch for people walking on our roads.

In California, 1,090 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in 2024, accounting for 28% of all traffic fatalities.

Whether you’re behind the wheel or on foot, we all play a role in keeping our roads safe.

🚗 Drivers: Slow down, stay focused, yield at crosswalks and never drive impaired.

🚶 Pedestrians: Use crosswalks when available, stay visible, look both ways and make eye contact with drivers before crossing.

Small actions can prevent crashes and save lives.
