It's been years since we've heard a new album from the Carolina folk-pop Free University known as SYLVAN ESSO. Sometimes that means we're getting some vast new (potentially overdone) opus, but not on 'Ow ∞', which percolates like a fresh and unrushed morning brew. Born on a post-set hang at the , Madison-metro native (via Middleton) & Milwaukee expat Nick Sanborn and Vermont folk goddess Amelia Meath clearly have nothing to hide - peel off that artfully placed rainbow obi and you'll see an example of what we mean - and the result is an album that feels inwardly and outwardly honest. Lots of guests on this one, too many to name, but it sounds like they're all just hanging out and anonymously riffing, anyway. Like their fellow dauphins to the throne of Mac, Bon Iver, this group succeeds in making the detritus of modern life sound elegant, even euphoric. Purple vinyl is in the house, but if there's just too many colors for you right now, maaaan, we also have the standard black LP.
