Over the past 30 years, Dr. Douglas King has transformed his once rocky, overgrown homestead into an oasis for native plants, pollinators, and wildlife.

A lifelong nature enthusiast, King felt called to support conservation efforts. In the past year, however, he began to struggle as hip pain limited his mobility.

“I tried to get better by walking on the treadmill and stretching, but the pain just kept getting worse,” he said.

For nearly six months, King pushed through discomfort. When everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs, and getting in and out of the car became difficult, he knew it was time to seek help.

After exploring a variety of treatment options, he decided to entrust the teams at SSM Health with his care.

“I had previous positive experiences at SSM Health,” King said, noting he was also impressed by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Andrew Livermore.

Although nervous about undergoing a joint replacement procedure, King was put at ease by the strong communication he received from the orthopedics team.

“I was literally being advised almost in real time whenever I had a question,” King said. “I do not know how they can possibly do it, but I appreciated such remarkable help.”

King's joint replacement surgery took place on April 30. After the procedure, any lingering concerns turned to amazement.

“I got out of bed and then a nurse walked with me to the far end of the hall,” he said. “That was the longest walk I’d taken in at least six months, and there I was doing it without pain right after waking up.”

From start to finish, King described his experience at SSM Health as seamless and remarkably coordinated.

“It was like medical choreography - a symphony of people coming together at the right time and in the right places,” he said.

Now several months post-surgery, King is back to enjoying life. He can once again work outdoors, care for his prairie, and take walks through the conservancy woods he has spent so many years cultivating and protecting.

“Maybe it’s finally time for me to put down my chainsaw,” he said. “But I have my life back at 82, and that is something for which I will be forever grateful.”
