For the first time since 2019, the Gathering of the Waters Powwow returned to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Saturday, filling the university’s new Sonnentag Center with traditional dancing, drumming, and community connection. Story below 🔽

The Wisconsin Historical Society and the Center for the Study of the American Constitution at University of Wisconsin-Madison invite you to the 2026 James Madison Lecture Series featuring Michael Witgen.

The early American republic adopted imperial Europe's playbook: treat the "New World" as empty wilderness and frame conquest as peaceful civilization. Michael Witgen, citizen of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians and Pulitzer finalist, unpacks that story and what lies beneath it.

Wisconsin’s first Wild Rice Week is Aug. 30 to Sept. 6! Wild rice, or "manoomin,” is found only in the upper Midwest and parts of Canada and was once abundant in northern Wisconsin. The plant serves a vital role in Indigenous culture and spirituality, but its presence in state waters has declined significantly over the past several decades.

This year’s wild rice harvesting season is beginning and will continue through the month of September. You can help wild rice by not driving boats through the wild rice beds and, if you're harvesting wild rice this year, making sure the rice is ripe before you begin and harvesting gently.
