BEFORE YOU BOOK AN INTERSTATE MOVE, UNDERSTAND WHAT A MOVING BROKER ACTUALLY IS.

You’ve got an out of state move coming up.

You go to Google, find three moving companies, and get three quotes.

$6,500

$7,200

$11,780

Naturally, you look at the $11,780 quote and think:

“Why would I pay that much more?”

But there may be a major difference hiding behind those numbers.

You may not be comparing three moving companies offering the same service.

You may be comparing a direct carrier against moving brokers.

A moving broker typically doesn’t perform the actual transportation. They arrange the move and then find a motor carrier to service it.

The person selling your move may never touch a box, load your furniture, drive the truck, or deliver your belongings.

And this is where I’ve watched things go sideways.

The sales process often starts with a verbal inventory.

Couches. Beds. Dressers. Tables.

“How many boxes do you think you’ll have?”

Your inventory is converted into an estimated amount of cubic footage, and the quote is built around that estimated space.

But there’s an obvious problem:

You aren’t packed yet.

The closets aren’t finished. The garage isn’t done. The kitchen isn’t packed.

You might estimate 30 boxes when the final number ends up being 80, 100, or more.

Then, a few days before the move, comes what is often called the:

“QA Call.”

Now you ARE packed.

Your inventory gets updated.

More boxes.

More items.

More cubic footage.

More money.

Except now you’re only days away from moving.

Your house may be sold. Your lease may be ending. Hotels may already be booked. Your family is preparing to leave.

Your options are getting smaller by the hour.

Then moving day arrives, and this may be the first time you meet the company actually performing your move.

Not the salesperson.

Not necessarily the company name you originally called.

The carrier.

And now there may be additional charges depending on the shipment and conditions.

Tractor trailer can’t access the neighborhood?

Shuttle charge.

Loose items require additional packing?

Packing charge.

Shipment occupies more space than originally estimated?

More space. More money.

Then your belongings leave.

And this is the part of the broker model we want families to understand.

Depending on the service you purchased, your shipment may not be going directly from your old home to your new one.

It may be consolidated with other shipments.

It may be transferred.

It may be placed into storage while waiting for transportation.

Another carrier may become involved.

Your shipment may ultimately travel alongside several other customers’ belongings.

That can help explain why some broker quotes initially appear dramatically cheaper than dedicated transportation.

You may not be comparing the same service.

One quote may represent a dedicated move with a direct carrier.

Another may represent space within a transportation network where the shipment can be consolidated, transferred, stored, or handled by different parties along the way.

And when that process goes wrong, it can go very wrong.

I’m not writing this because I read about it online.

I’m writing this because I’ve stood across from families after it happened.

I’ve looked a wife in the eyes after her family lost $11,000 to a scam moving operation and helped walk that family through what a professional move was supposed to look like.

I’ve walked into situations where families had already handed over thousands in deposits and were suddenly being told they needed thousands more.

Then we’re trying to figure out how to complete their move while saving every dollar possible because a large portion of their moving budget is already gone.

And many of these families thought they did everything right.

They went to Google.

They looked at reviews.

They visited the website.

They checked out the company at a surface level.

They got multiple estimates.

And they chose what appeared to be the better deal.

But surface research and real due diligence are two very different things.

Dig deeper.

Look up the company’s USDOT and MC information.

Find out whether they are actually registered as a broker or carrier.

Look at complaint history and patterns, not just the overall star rating.

Read the negative reviews and look for the same issues appearing repeatedly.

Large deposits.

Last minute price increases.

Different companies showing up on moving day.

Unexpected carrier changes.

Additional charges.

Extended delivery delays.

Difficulty reaching someone after pickup.

Customers who didn’t know who actually had their belongings.

Look at how long the company has operated under its current authority.

Read the paperwork you’re being asked to sign.

Verify who will actually be responsible for transporting your shipment.

One complaint is a complaint. A repeated pattern is something you should pay attention to.

That’s why we want families to understand moving brokers before they book, not after they’ve handed over a deposit and their belongings.

This isn’t about saying every broker is a scam.

It isn’t about saying the most expensive estimate is automatically the best estimate.

It’s about knowing who you are hiring and what service you are actually purchasing.

Before giving anyone a deposit, ask:

Are you a broker or the motor carrier actually performing my move?

Who owns the equipment coming to my home?

Who employs the crew?

Has my actual carrier already been assigned?

Is my transportation dedicated or consolidated?

Can my belongings be transferred or placed into storage?

Can another carrier take possession of my shipment?

What can cause my price to change?

Who is responsible if something goes wrong?

DON’T JUST ASK WHY ONE QUOTE COSTS MORE.
ASK WHY ANOTHER ONE COSTS SO MUCH LESS.

There may be a very important difference in what you’re actually buying.

At First Class Relocation & Storage, our dedicated interstate moves are handled as a direct carrier.

Our equipment. Our crews. Our responsibility.

We want families to know the difference before moving day, not after something has already gone wrong.

Movers who actually show up. 💪

Blankets on the furniture. Runners on the floor. Every piece wrapped like it's going into our own house.

This is what a First Class move looks like.

Another 5-star review, and we couldn't be more grateful.

One of the greatest compliments we can receive is earning the trust of a family that had a bad experience with another moving company. That's exactly why we do what we do.

At First Class Relocation & Storage, every move is handled by our own team from start to finish. No brokers. No subcontractors. Just honest communication, careful handling, and a commitment to treating your home and belongings with the respect they deserve.

Thank you, Ashwitha, for trusting us with your move from Dallas to Austin and for taking the time to share your experience. Reviews like yours mean the world to our family-owned business.
If you're planning a move and want to know exactly who's showing up at your door, give us a call. We'd be honored to earn your trust too.

Before you hand your life to a moving company, watch this.

Ask who's actually driving the truck. Ask if the quote is locked. Ask what happens if your new place isn't ready.

If they get cagey, you already have your answer.

Your whole life is about to go into one truck. 📦

Photo albums. The kitchen table you ate every dinner at. The chair nobody's allowed to sit in but your dad.

We don't take that lightly. First box to last mile.

Dallas, we're officially here. 🎉

We've spent years building a crew that treats every home like it's their own. Now we're bringing that to Dallas and the metro.

Full time movers. Not day labor. Not whoever answered the phone that morning.

Excited to get to work.
