Refill Jackson Initiative utilizes these 5 group norms during Pre- Employment training. These norms guide the flow of the 4-6 week training program and shapes our culture. What is a group norm from our list that you would implement in your daily life?

For youth in general, unemployment fosters feelings of helplessness; for youth aged 17-25, unemployment during a recession can adversely affect their beliefs about life chances. Unemployment also increases the probability of being unemployed later in life and decreases the potential for lifetime earnings.

In September 2024, at the UN Summit of the Future, a majority of world leaders adopted the Pact for the Future, global digital compact and declaration” aimed at protecting the needs and interests of present and future generations in a time of existential global risks.

Each cohort ends with a graduation ceremony where members not only receive recognition for their hard work, but selected members are also honored with awards based on the organization’s group norms. This year, we added a new group norm: Take Care of Each Other.

At Refill, there is a special tradition: when an award is presented for the first time, it is named after the person who receives it. This year, the Take Care of Each Other Award was presented to Ladeja Redd.

Ladeja truly exemplified what it means to look out for your fellow cohort members. She consistently showed up with a smile on her face, encouraged those around her, and was always willing to offer a kind word or lend her support. She reminded us that taking care of each other is not just a group norm—it is something we can choose to practice every day.
The Ladeja Redd Award will now be passed down to other cohort members who exemplify the same qualities!

Completing high school has many positive effects, but educational efforts alone are unlikely to offer a solution to youth disconnection.
