For us, that means more than grades or assignments. It means a student feels seen, supported, and understood for who they are. It means families feel like they have people in their corner.

🧩 This Day in Autism History — September 16

On September 16, 2021, Dr. Ruth C. Sullivan, one of the most influential parent advocates in the history of autism, passed away at age 97. Her work helped shape autism advocacy, education, and family support in the United States.
Dr. Sullivan became involved in autism advocacy after her son, Joseph, was diagnosed in the early 1960s, at a time when families had far fewer resources and much less public understanding of autism. She went on to:
• Co-found what became the Autism Society of America in 1965
• Serve as its first elected president
• Advocate for educational rights for children with disabilities
• Help push for the federal law that later became known as IDEA
• Establish autism services and training programs
• Advocate for greater support for autistic adults, not just children

Her story is an important reminder of how much autism education and advocacy have changed—and how much of that progress came from families who insisted their children deserved access, dignity, opportunity, and belonging.
Today, we remember Dr. Sullivan and the generations of parents, autistic individuals, educators, and advocates who continue that work.

Autism can look different in every child. 💚

Some children may experience communication, sensory input, routines, social situations, or transitions differently. At the same time, many autistic children bring incredible strengths—deep interests, creativity, honesty, persistence, and attention to detail.

One of the most powerful things adults can do is create environments where children feel understood, supported, and safe enough to learn and grow.

The goal isn’t to change who a child is. It’s to understand what helps them thrive.

Every child deserves to feel capable, valued, and like they belong.
