SWD High School Bands

A message from the Director of Bands, Mr. James Seda:

“As our community mourns the passing of the legendary Coach William “Buck” Godfrey, I’m reminded that we cannot assume our current students (maybe even faculty) know who he was or fully understand the incredible legacy he leaves behind.

I was blessed to work with Coach Godfrey at Southwest DeKalb High School during the latter part of his coaching career and share many Friday night football games with this legend. His wisdom, leadership, humility, intellect and presence left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him, myself included.

His impact extended far beyond the football field. Coach Godfrey helped shape generations of young people, influenced countless coaches, and elevated the standard of excellence throughout our community and the coaching profession. His accomplishments transcended high school football.

Today, I took a few moments in my band classes to share his story and some of his many contributions. It is our responsibility to ensure that the current and next generation understands whose shoulders they stand on and appreciates the legacy of those who paved the way.

We were honored to have Coach Godfrey with us last fall as the Southwest DeKalb community and DeKalb County School District Athletics celebrated his extraordinary career in his presence, at the stadium that bears his name. In the days ahead, we will once again come together, this time to celebrate his remarkable life and enduring legacy.

May God bless and comfort his family, who so graciously shared him with us for so many years. 🙏🏽

Rest in peace, Coach. Thank you for your service, your leadership, and the countless lives you changed. Your legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.”

Any parents who are still working on getting your children registered with the Southwest DeKalb Marching Band will need to do so by the end of this week! Please email [email protected] for any questions or concerns you may have.

SWD Family and supporters we need you!🚨 Please assist the Southwest DeKalb Marching Band by donating cases of bottled water and Gatorade to our program. Our goal is to receive 200 cases for both forms of hydration! For those that cannot physically donate we ask that you donate to our Zelle at [email protected] and put “hydration donation” in the comment section.

We appreciate those that have been able to provide hydration to the band so far! Let’s continue to support our members today!💙💛
