SAFETY SUNDAY
The summer temps are rising, so be aware of heat-related issues! Heat related issues, like heat exhaustion and heat stroke, can happen fast. Here are some things to keep in mind when spending time in the sun this summer...

💦Drink Water: This may seem like a no brainer, but to drink at least 64 ounces of water per day...and of course more if you active during warm temperatures
⛱️Find Shade: take frequent breaks in the shade to cool off and rest, especially when doing physical activities
🩱Wear Light, Breathable Clothes: light colored and loose fitting clothes help regulate your body temps
🌡️Heat Exhaustion Signs: Dizziness, intense thirst, heavy sweating, nausea, and weakness...if anyone has this symptoms act quickly by getting them to a cooler place and get water in their system
🥵Heat Stroke Signs: Confusion, dizziness, and loss of consciousness...act fast and call 911 immediately

SAFETY SUNDAY
With it being summer, let's talk about pool safety folks. Below are some tips to keep your loved ones safe this summer while enjoying that backyard pool...

-Think about installing a fence for your backyard pool. The fence should be at least four-feet high and have a self-closing, self-latching gate that has a locking mechanism beyond a child's reach.

-Supervision is a must. Follow the 10/20 rule when you're at the pool. The 10/20 rule states the supervising adult needs to position themselves to be able to scan the pool within 10 seconds and reach the water within 20 seconds.

-Always check the pool first if a child is missing. Child drowning is often a silent death that alerts no one with splashes or yells for help. Many drowning accidents happen when children have been missing for less than five minutes.

-Empty small wading pools after children are done playing and remove all toys. Infants can drown in just a few inches of water. Pool toys may attract children to the pool when it is unattended.

-Teach your child to swim, but remember that younger children shouldn't be left unsupervised around water even if they know how to swim.

-Have a phone poolside and learn CPR in case of emergencies.

CHENEY RODEO PARADE!
We love being part of this community tradition! It was a blast, as usual, to partake in the annual Cheney Rodeo Parade earlier today. We hope you all had a fantastic parade day & a safe and fun rodeo weekend…yeehaw!

TOOL TIME THURSDAY
Another not glorious task but an important one for firefighters….tool maintenance! Today Cheney firefighters took the time to sharpen various tools that we use on our different apparatuses. For us a sharp tool is a useful tool!

🚩RED FLAG WARNING🚩
We have a Red Flag Warning in effect until 10pm Wednesday night. What is a Red Flag Warning you ask?! This warning is an official alert issued by the National Weather Service when critical fire weather conditions are occurring or expected soon. These conditions include warm temperatures, strong winds, low humidity & dry vegetation.

Please avoid the following...
-Using fireworks
-Starting camping fires
-Dragging trailer chains
-Driving over dry grass
-Target shooting
-Any yard work that could create sparks

SCBA MASK FIT TEST
This month the Cheney Fire Department is doing their annual SCBA mask fit testing. A firefighter’s self containing breathing apparatus (SCBA) mask is a vital part of our personal protective equipment. Whether we are in a toxic structure fire or any other hazardous environment our SCBA’s allow us to breath clean air.

During this testing, firefighters connect their face piece to a computerized testing system that measures mask seal integrity in real time. Annual fit testing is required and helps ensure that respiratory protection continues to perform as designed.

While this might not be the most visible or glorious part of the job, fit testing is a critical part of our training and emergency readiness.

SAFETY SUNDAY
There’s nothing like outdoor grilling. It’s one of the most popular ways to cook food. But a grill placed too close to anything that can burn is a fire hazard. It can be very hot, causing burn injuries. Below are some simple safety tips to ensure you have a safe & fun summer grilling your favorite foods…

-For propane grills, check the gas tank for leaks before use.
-Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
-Place the grill well away from the home, deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches (3 ft. diameter clearance).
-Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.
-If you use starter fluid when charcoal grilling, only use charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire. When you have or are finished grilling, let the coals cool completely before disposing in a metal container.
-Never leave your grill unattended when in use.
